Toolfarm Effect of the Week: Need to Make A Splash?
By Michele Yamazaki on Nov 10, 2011 at 01:10 PM
A customer was asking how to create a splash effect and while there are really no plug-ins to create a splashing effect in After Effects or FCP, there are ways to achieve a natural realistic splash. Liquid simulation is not all that easy. Red Giant Psunami makes great water but can't do splashes. When I Googled "Splash tutorial" I ended up getting a lot of interesting photography tutorials on capturing that quick moment in time. So what can you do if you need a moving splash?
Splash with Trapcode Particular
If you want something that looks cool but don't necessarily need natural realism, check out this tutorial from Robert Lagar. The splash is made with Trapcode Particular and is animated to the music. Very interesting. Watch the tutorial here.
Ayatoweb also has a short tutorial on creating a splash logo animation using Particular.
Luxology modo Splash Kit
Luxology modo Splash Kit is specifically designed for adding splashes to your projects, plus it's 35% off through the end of November! Here are a couple of samples of splashes made with the modo Splash kit.

Nextlimit Realflow 2012
When I googled making splashes, Nextlimit Realflow came up over and over. People are making splashes with Realflow and Maya or Realflow and 3ds Max.
Here's a sample of Realflow + 3ds Max.
Here is part 1 of a multipart tutorial on making splashes in Realflow.
Using Your Own Video or Stock footage
A good option is to shoot a splash in a tank or try some stock footage. If you shoot your own, you may want to try shooting with a fast shutter speed at the highest frames per second you camera can handle.
If you don't want the hassle and mess of shooting, here is a short sample of a few of the many splashes available at Artbeats.
Save 5% every day on Artbeats footage by using the Toolfarm link
We used to have Artbeats footage in our old store but we really didn't have a good way to represent the massive number of clips they have available. Instead we have partnered with Artbeats to give Toolfarm customers an extra 5% off any Artbeats footage. It's easy!
