Heinz Challenge Ad
Erik Rubner, son of Michael Rubner, a Detroit camera guy, shot & edited this spot for the Heinz Challenge with John Mabila and Charles Green. Three-man crew, one day shoot. Michael posted it to the Michigan production email list to which I subscribe.
It is a really cool spot, combining an old film look with the modern world by the television liason. They have the effect of the hand reaching out of the TV (not quite as ominous as the similar action in 'The Ring' and use spot color, as seen in 'Sin City'. It's a clever ad.

Bjork - Bachelorette
Yes, this is an oldie, but I seem to have missed it. I love this song. It's just gorgeous. Directed by Michel Gondry, this has a strange, dream-like video that begins with an old film look, which looks completely authentic. Bjork finds a book with blank pages in a hole in the woods. The words write onto a blank book. Then, Bjork is on a stage in some sort of theatre production. The words disappear and the producer/editor becomes a bush. The book ends up returning to the earth. Hey, I said it was strange. There is no lack of creativity here. Brilliant stuff.

Not a real tough effect to create. Once could accomplish this with some rotoscoped paths and the Vegas or stroke plug-in. Maybe a little Find Edges. About 2/3 in, there are a hundred glowing mouth outlines singing along. Cool vid.(Via Antville

Smashing Pumpkins - That's the Way (My Love Is)
The latest video from Smashing Pumpkins is a futuristic, effects filled extravaganza. It's mainly black and whilte with spot color, loads of 3D and lighting effects, and video composited on little future TVs. Not a half bad song, but I miss the Smashing Pumpkins of yore. Back in the day, I saw them live 11 times. I was a total Pumpkin Head. I like their new stuff, but not nearly as much as their stuff from Gish and Siamese Dream. The subtleties are not there, the quirkiness, the fun. Just a heavy wall of sound. Don't get me wrong. Rockin' out is my birthrite, but I miss the old sound. I do think the video is pretty cool though - one that takes several watchings to see the details. After several watchings I'll probably love the song.

Dynamic Painting by San Base
San Base is a contemporary artist originally from Russia who now lives in Canada. He has perfected a program to generate algorythms that move elements in a painting fluidly to come up with a dynamic picture. I could look at it all day. Read more about the technology behind Dynamic painting. Wouldn't that be nice at your next soiree.

AT&T 1993 "You Will" Ads
An interesting collection of 14 year old spots and I have to say, their predictions were (mostly) right on target. Our GPS isn't quite that fancy, even in 3D mode, but it's pretty darn accurate. Eerie... or actually, that was only 14 years ago so I'm sure everything was in development at that time.
The lady with the phone booth though, um, yeah. I left my mother-in-law at the mall once and told her to call me from a phone booth when she was ready. There were two phones at the mall and neither of them worked, much less having video features. She ended up having to use the phone behind the counter at The Gap.

Every Cigarette is Doing Damage
Some seriously gross but cool medical animations and effects showing the damage those cancer sticks are doing to smokers. I've been trying to get my husband to quit for good since the day we wed. Maybe showing this video to him will finally convince him to give it up for good.

Two animated fighter pilots try to blow each other out of the sky with beautiful explosions and smoke that morph into dragons and rainbows and other psychedelic stuff. The song in the commercial is Special Thing by Viva Voce.

The Van is Back: Honda Odyssey
Just caught this one on tv. This might be old, but I have a habit of ignoring commercials or surfing to another channel at ad time. This commercial is totally groovy, man.... great fluid effects and a P-Funk tune that we all know.

Be Kind Rewind Theatrical Trailer by Michel Gondry
Be Kind Rewind, a movie coming out this fall from Michel Gondry, stars Jack Black. The trailer has some fun bad video tape effects and cool titles with little stickers on VHS tapes, plus some clever animated remakes of films - like the puppets in the remake of Jurrasic Park.Okay, who rents video tapes anymore! I hope this is supposed to be set in the 80s.

Modest Mouse - Missed the Boat
Modest Mouse, another band I saw at Lollapalooza 2007, is one of those groups like The White Stripes and Bjork, who you just expect to have good music videos. Missed the Boat has a 1950's feel with a boxy robot who's in love with a girl on tv, a coquettish Donna Reed daughter type.
They have a great hologram effect from the robot and some lazer beams as he fights this srange alien creature with lipstick and nail polish. The effects are a playful and from a bygone era. The video is lots of fun.

Silverchair - Reflections of a Sound
Silverchair had some fame in the early 90s as a teenage grunge band. I still had that idea in my head when I caught their show at Lollapalooza 2007. Their music has evolved in many directions since then, and their video looks nothing like Smells Like Teen Spirit (although, that's a great video). The poppy Reflections of a Sound, directed by Damon Escott and Stephen Lance, uses all sorts of effects and incorporates the band into Postmoder paintings of Piet Modrian, Andy Warho, as well as other pieces of art... Daniel Johns as the Mona Lisa! The effects are colorful and fun, mixing styles seamlessly. Lots of masking and compositing.

Talib Kweli - Hot Thang/In the Mood
Hot Thang/In the Mood directed by Bernard Gourley, this is essentially two videos in one, and the first one is by far the coolest. It's totally a take on the HP commercials and it's so well done. It's very slickly produced and fun to watch. Something like this would need to be planned ever so carefully. The ice cube shot is great.Is that the guy from Black Eyed Peas?

Punk da Junk: A Journey of Epic Nutrition
I've been posting info here and there about Get Outta My Face - a non-profit org that teaches kids to eat well and to block out the corporate junk food ads and messages that we are bombarded with daily. GOMF is taking videos by students about nutrition and healthy lifestyles and putting them into this massive collection of videos. It's to raise awareness for what we all know is a huge problem in the US and elsewhere. They're still taking videos so if you're young enough to participate, please do! Or, help your kids make a video.
They've done a lot of really cool hand drawn animations and some stop motion at the end. It's a great video.
Winner of Best of Show and Best 72 hour shootout at BendFilm's Future Filmaker's Festival.
This video took 31 hours to make: 20.5 to film and 10.5 to edit.

Luscious Life - Patrick Watson
A gorgeous video with lots of texture, paper cutouts and grunged up film effects and a bit of 3D. It was directed by Gabriel Coutu-Dumont, a multi-diciplinary artist from Montreal.
Patrick Watson's voice and style reminds me a bit of Jeff Buckley.
