Boris Continuum Complete 6 AVX for Avid DS brings nearly 200 filters to Avid DS Version 10.2.1 and higher. BCC AVX is bundled with all Avid Media Composer and Symphony systems. With a BCC AVX for DS license, Avid facilities are now able to conform sequences with AVX 2.0-based BCC effects for finishing in Avid DS. Learn More about BCC AVX for Avid DS | Free Trial
Most of BCC 6 AE's effects run in Adobe's Premiere Pro CS4, my NLE of choice, and After Effects, an application with which I have a love-hate relationship. There are a few new effects that only run in After Effects. They tend to involve 3D text, or both. The BCC 6 filters that run in AE I find easier to use than many native AE filters. One that was surprisingly easy to use was the Type-On Text filter. While I've used AE's templates to make animated tltles before, this lets you do much more, with less work. It also creates the text in 3D, with a wide array of textures, and pre-made motion files, that far exceeds what you can do in AE alone.
Today Michele Yamazaki from Toolfarm shares a tutorial and project for creating a gorgeous 3D spinning snow flake completely in After Effects and use Boris Continuum Complete 6.0. 3D Objects is the focus here - an amazing new set of plug-ins in v6.0. The project files are AE CS4.
I created a quick walk through of the template so you can see how to replace the images with your own photos, or even video, if you are so inclined. The video was captured and edited very quickly and easily in Telestream ScreenFlow, which is fantastic. Try a free demo here.
Conform Avid Media Composer Sequences with BCC Effects in Avid DS
Marlborough MA - November 30, 2009 - Boris FX, the leading developer of integrated effects technology for video and film, today announced that Boris Continuum Complete 6 AVX for Avid DS (BCC 6 AVX for DS) is now available for Avid's AVX 2.0 plug-in architecture. BCC 6 AVX for DS brings nearly 200 filters to Avid DS Version 10.2.1 and higher. BCC AVX is bundled with all Avid Media Composer and Symphony systems. With a BCC AVX for DS license, Avid facilities are now able to conform sequences with AVX 2.0-based BCC effects for finishing in Avid DS.
In addition to AVX 2.0 support, BCC 6 AVX for DS introduces all-new Lens Blur, Lens Transition, and Lens Shape filters that emulate lens blur or rack defocus effects as well as a suite of time-based effects such as Optical Flow, Optical Stabilizer, and Motion Key.
"Five years ago, Avid selected Boris Continuum Complete AVX as the bundled effects package for Avid Media Composer and Symphony systems – based on the versatility and image quality of the filters. Thousands of Avid editors rely on BCC AVX every day," commented Boris Yamnitsky, president and founder, Boris FX. "With the release of the AVX 2.0 version of BCC 6 AVX for DS, offline and online sequences with AVX 2.0-based BCC effects can now be conformed in Avid DS, extending Avid's Total Conform capabilities. BCC 6 AVX for Avid DS also introduces highly sought after Lens Blur, Lens Shape, and time-based effects."
New Feature Highlights
Conform Offline and Online BCC Effects. BCC AVX is bundled with all Avid Media Composer and Symphony systems. With a BCC 6 AVX for DS license, Avid facilities are now able to conform sequences with AVX 2.0-based BCC effects for finishing in Avid DS.
Lens Blur Filter. BCC Lens Blur emulates a lens blur or rack defocus effect where out-of-focus highlights of an image clip take on the shape of the lens.
Lens Shape Filter. Like BCC Lens Blur, BCC Lens Shape emulates a lens blur or rack defocus effect where out of focus highlights of an image clip take on the shape of the lens. However, the Lens Shape filter uses an image input for the highlight shape.
Lens Transition Filter. The BCC Lens Transition wipe filter applies a lens blur or rack defocus effect to the specular highlights of outgoing and incoming image clips.
Motion Key Filter. BCC Motion Key is a "magical" effect that removes moving cars or other objects from a scene by automatically painting them out with Optical Flow technology.
Optical Stabilizer Filter. Remove camera shake from a hand-held shot, lock a shot as if it was taken from a tripod, or smooth the motion of a panning or rolling shot. Image resizing and cropping is automatically calculated and rendered with high-quality up-scale methods.
Optical Flow Filter. BCC Optical Flow facilitates high-quality speed-up or slow-down of footage in forward or reverse direction, accurately constructing synthetic frames of video that would correspond to an over-cranked film camera shot. Missing frames of video are reconstructed based on “motion vector” fields.
DeInterlace Filter. BCC DeInterlace is a high-quality de-interlacing filter that blends high-motion parts of an image while keeping low-motion areas sharp.
Motion Blur Filter. Based on Optical Flow motion vectors, BCC Motion Blur creates an in-camera motion blur effect from video shot with normal shutter speed.
Other New Time-based Effects include Jitter, Jitter Basic, Looper, Posterize Time, Sequencer, Temporal Blur, Time Displacement, Trails, Trails Basic, and Velocity Remap.
32-bit Float Image Format. BCC 6 AVX's OpenGL filters now render images in 32-bit float.

Based on award-winning Optical Flow and Motion Tracking technology, workhorse BCC filters such as Optical Stabilizer, Corner Pin, Match Move, Witness Protection, and Motion Blur are now available in Premiere Pro 4.1.
Featuring new Animated Presets for 3D Objects, a revamped Optical Stabilizer filter, and enhanced Adobe Premiere Pro 4.1 support, BCC 6.0.4 AE is a free, major update for BCC 6 AE users...
Revamped Optical Stabilizer Filter BCC Optical Stabilizer, which automatically smoothes or completely eliminates shaky camera motion, now provides more feedback during the image analysis process. In addition, a new Autoscale option automatically transform scales a locked down clip so that it fills the frame or composite window.
In addition to Adobe After Effects, BCC Optical Stabilizer is now available for Adobe Premiere Pro 4.1.
Corner Pin Filter Now Available for Adobe Premiere Pro 4.1 BCC Corner Pin lets you perform 4-point motion tracking and corner pinning. Premiere Pro users can now track the motion of the corner points in an image and use this motion to map a second image clip to the source image clip. A typical use of the filter might be to place the content of a billboard or sign onto a moving car or truck.
Match Move Filter Now Available for Adobe Premiere Pro 4.1 BCC Match Move allows you to copy the motion from one clip and apply the motion to a second clip. The filter includes several compositing options such as edge cropping and blending, drop shadow and borders, 3D lighting, and a special light wrap feature for photorealistic image composites.
Witness Protection Filter Now Available for Adobe Premiere Pro 4.1 BCC Witness Protection uses advanced motion tracking technology to follow the motion of user-defined pixels and then uses this recovered image motion to alter the selected pixels in the image clip. For example, you can use this filter to automatically obscure the identity of a person's face using the built-in blur or mosaic effects, or highlight a football as it is moving through the air with the built-in tint or color correction effects.
Motion Blur Filter Now Available for Adobe Premiere Pro 4.1 The BCC Motion Blur filter creates a realistic blur on the motion in an image, simulating the effect of shooting a moving object on film. The blur is based on the motion of the pixels in the image.
Optical Flow Filter Now Available for Adobe Premiere Pro 4.1 The Optical Flow clip retiming filter estimates the motion between two frames of video and renders an intermediate frame that interpolates the motion. The filter delivers sharp, artifact-free slow-motion results.
Motion Key Filter Now Available for Adobe Premiere Pro 4.1 Ever needed to fix a clip where an unwanted or unexpected object appears in the scene? BCC Motion Key isolates and removes moving foreground objects from a clip without the need for complex masking or cloning.
Animated Presets for 3D Objects (After Effects only) BCC 6 AE's Animated Presets option has been extended to include the BCC 3D Objects category of filters. This powerful feature lets you save animated effects for use in other projects or BCC hosts.
Save a whopping 50% on Wednesday September 23 only. The sale will run from Midnight to 11:59pm EST. The cost of each bundle will be $997.50 (plus applicable tax and shipping).

Just the fact that you can very easily build 3D objects and text inside Apple Motion was good enough for me. However the magic did not stop there, when I looked at the different setting and parameters for each of the BCC 3D Objects I was stunned to see a truly vast numbers of settings that can be key-framed and animated within the realm of Apple Motion. You even have an option to specify your own textures, bump map, specular highlights for front image map, bevel and back image map of the created object. For me, personally, the cherry on the cake was that most of the 3D objects filters had dynamics built in. You had a choice of using (Curl, Shatter, Ripple, Pulse, all of the mentioned dynamics had a vast array of settings which could be manipulated).
Check out the full review from Zac. I have to completely agree. The 3D Objects are incredible plug-ins. You have to try them out to see how great they are (and if you're not a Motion user, but an After Effects or Premiere user, you're in luck. In AE you can use the built in lights and camera as well. Download a 14 day demo here. (Note: It has been updated to work in Snow Leopard too!) Here is a test movie from Zac:
If you could only purchase one comprehensive set of plug-ins for your NLE, the answer is simple: Boris Continuum Complete. Currently at a well-seasoned version 6, BorisFx offers Continuum Complete for AE (After Effects and Premiere), FxPlug (Apple Final Cut Studio and Final Cut Express), AVX (including Media Composer 3.5, Newscutter, Symphony and a version specific to Avid DS 10 or greater) and Sparks (Flint, Flame, Inferno and Smoke).
After Effects offers a lot straight out of the box, but when getting serious with Motion Graphics you may want to migrate out of what After Effects gives you and invest in a supplementary suite of effects. One reason for doing this is that a lot of designers use the AE effects out of the box and end up coming up with similar looks. Migrating to a new suite can give you a new interface to work with and open your mind to new looks. In any case what you want to look for is value. Until now, I have used the Sapphire suite for my supplementary effects. I've continually upgraded functionality by adding effects plugin from Zaxwerks and Trapcode among others.
Being so used to the much more expensive Sapphire package, I was skeptical that Boris Continuum Complete 6's (BCC6) effects could be any better than what I am currently using. Upon investigation my first thought was "Wow, there is a lot here!" I was right and that was just the beginning.
Figure 1. AdvLensFlare: This is a preset called Big Hoops. This plugin is great for adding depth with real customizable light effects.
Figure 1a. AdvLensFlare: Look at the breakdown of everything you can add, takeaway, or customize in just this one effect.
Ease of Use As I've immersed myself in BCC6, I've come to truly discover that Boris FX are GREAT at the default level. Most of them work great the minute you apply the effect. BE WARNED! You will be tempted to use these effects at default and end up a week later seeing the same look on a cheap TV spot on The CW. Boris should not be faulted for this. It seems as though they design the effects for quick-use. That being said, they add a plethora of customizable options to each effect.
Although I don't have enough space to write about each individual effect, I do want to give a brief run-down of some of the effects that immediately made me jump out of my seat and drop kick the first person I saw in a fit of joy. (Hey, we all have our own special ways of expressing our joy! Mine is just a bit more aggressive than others.)
1. Advanced Lens Flare: For the love of God, someone has finally done it. They've perfected the Lens Flare! Each and every feature of a standard Lens Flare is customizable, addable and subtractable delivering believeability and depth to any element you add it to. Forgive me if someone did it before Boris with this much control and I haven't run across it, but this effect is ESSENTIAL.
2. Generators: I can't tell you how many hours I've wasted in Photoshop recreating rock, wood floor, fire or any other sort of texture over and over again. This sounds really stupid I know, but this kind of stuff comes in handy time and time again.
3. 3D Effects: Previously only available through Zaxwerks, Boris Continuum Complete includes a full 3D extrusion suite. This alone is worth the price of admission. (check out some of the examples at http://borisfx.com/after_effects/bccae/3D_movies.php )
4. Cartoon Look: For years I've admired the look of movies like Waking Life and to a lesser extent those Charles Schwab commercials where the people are cartoon characters for no particular reason. Boris includes an effect that imitates this look with stunning precision.
Figure 2. Generators: Just a sample of a few of the generator plugins. This can save you hours of messing around in Photoshop.
Depth of Options One of the problems that I've had with other effects suites is that even when you get a plethora of options, they don't necessarily play well with other After Effects functionality, rendering them pretty much useless. In the Sapphire suite, this comes into play sometimes when using a mask. And at times, similar third party effects don't get along with the After Effects 3D environment. In the case of BCC6, not only do they give you A LOT of options for each effect, but there seemed to be no conflicts with my workflow.
Figure 3. PixelChooser: When you select PixelChooser (available in many of the effects) The functionality is nearly doubled.
In the case of masks, BorisFX's exclusive PixelChooser option allows you to integrate masks into the effect or avoid them entirely by using preset in-effect masks for quick use. As an added bonus EVERY effect comes with about two dozen really well thought out preset modes. Not just static presets but pre-keyframed animated presets that will automatically stretch to the length of your clip if you want them to.
Figure 4. Presets: A snapshot of the insane amount of presets available. Each folder is filled up like this one.
Performance From my in-depth tests and immersion in this software I've found that the Boris suite does exactly what it sets out to do effectively and efficiently. In the realm of 3D, if you are looking for speed, Zaxwerks still beats Boris. However, Boris comes through so much stronger in features and real deal functionality with the AE 3D environment that it really is worth the extra time. (And I didn't have the crash problems that I sometimes have with Zaxwerks.)
Figure 5. The Cartoon Look applied to a Swish Pan move.
Figure 6. Misalignment: The BCC Misalignment effect offers a RGB effect similar to that of Video Copilot's Twitch. But with presets like this, "Crossing Route," you can quickly create background elements for trailers and DVD menus
One thing to note before buying: Double check the system requirements for the 3D effects. These simply won't work on some older systems.
Figure 7.Rays Ripply: The Rays Ripply effect offers a visual effect not unlike Trapcode's Shine, but with built in auto-animation for a more dynamic effect.
Figure 8. LED: With the BCC LED effect you can mimic everything from a Lite Brite to a Fisher Price PXL2000.
Value For low-budget filmmakers, a $995 investment may seem like a lot of money. I recommend taking some time to think about the value you are getting for that money. Many effect suites sit around the thousand dollar mark, but on top of getting all the great features of blurs, lighting effects, generators, and particle systems, you also get great features not found anywhere else (other than in very specific and costly plug-in sets). For example, to just get into real 3D extrusion effects, the Zaxwerks Proanimator plugin costs $695.00 to do just that. On top of that, you also get plugins that mimics Trapcode's Shine and 3D stroke (while these effects are somewhat different from the Trapcode options, they do the trick in a pinch). You even get a 3D Layer Deformer, which would cost you about $300 for Digieffects Freeform AE (see last month's review).
Figure 9. Damaged TV: Damaged TV has a ton of auto-animating presets that run the gamut of bad reception looks. This works especially well for customizable transitions too.
Not only do I recommend getting the AE suite, but, if you have a Mac, I also suggest putting down an additional $100 to add on the Boris FXPlug in-editor effects as well. Available for Premier Pro (Mac only) or Final Cut Pro, Boris FXplug gives you quick use of the same effects plus additional effects that you might find useful. For instance the Swish Pan transition makes quick use of an often used Hollywood camera trick.
Figure 10. Prism: Prism provides a lot of cool playful RGB effects, good for music video stuff like this . But also very practical color blurs.

Oliver Peters Reviews Boris Continuum Complete 6 at his blog DigitalFilms.
"With so many products to offer, Boris FX tends to concentrate on updating all the versions of one product over the course of a year. 2009 has been the time to refresh many of the filters and all of the NLE host versions of Boris Continuum Complete, now at version 6. Continuum is probably the most wide-ranging set of filter packages available, consisting of keyers, effects, generators, color-correction, 3D text and more."
This video tutorial demonstrates some of BCC Extruded Texts animatable filter parameters that are useful in creating effects where text characters animate along an After Effects mask path.
This video tutorial gives you an in-depth look at the Jitter feature of Boris Continuum Complete 6 AEs Extruded Text filter. Basic functionality of the Jitter feature is explained and demonstrated. Then, the Jitter feature is shown in the context of a more developed effect involving audio and After Effects Camera and Lights.
We'll be going through our store and Plug-in Finder and replacing the box shots for the Boris FX products. What do you think of the new box art? I like it. Very clean.

New Chroma Key Studio Filter for Apple Final Cut Pro, Motion, and Final Cut Express
Marlborough MA - June 16, 2009 - Boris FX, the leading developer of integrated effects technology for video and film, announced that the Boris Continuum Chroma Key Unit now includes a Chroma Key Studio filter for real-time previews and rendering in Apple Final Cut Pro, Motion, and Final Cut Express.
Chroma Key Studio builds on the strength of Boris Continuum Complete's keying and compositing tools with features such as a best-of-breed chroma key process, spill suppression, matte choker, and a light wrap compositing step. All four tools are combined in one, easy-to-use filter; users do not need to stack multiple filters to pre and post process video.
In addition to Chroma Key Studio, the Boris Continuum Chroma Key Unit includes the following filters for Adobe After Effects and Premiere Pro in addition to Apple Pro Video Applications:
BCC Chroma Key for compositing camera footage shot using a blue, green, or orange screen as a backdrop over a new background video or a still image from a separate file. The Chroma Key filter includes a variety of Spill Suppression parameters.
BCC Matte Choker for tweaking the blur, choke, and softening along the edges of a key.
BCC Light Wrap to reflect the background image around the edges of a foreground image to form a border. This creates a more convincing composite by making it appear as if the images were shot in the same environment.
BCC Match Grain for sampling the grain from the background and applying it to the foreground, generating the appearance that the clips were shot on the same camera.
BCC Color Match for sampling the highlight, midtone, and shadow regions in the foreground and background images and blending some of the background color and luma values into the foreground, contributing to a seamless composite.

I got to demo these plug-ins at NAB this year for Boris FX and they are seriously impressive and easy to use. They are very fast with real-time updates, they use AE's built in camera and lights, not to mention that they work right in the After Effects native interface... no jumping to an unfamiliar interface. These plug-ins are seriously quality. The filters also work in Final Cut Pro or Motion. Below are a few samples.
