I was invited to the June Motion Picture Collective Meeting on plug-ins. It was held at Pratt Institute in New York City.
I got there about 45 minutes early and there was no one there! After about 30 minutes I started to worry that I came to the wrong place. As I was walking around I ran into Wes Plate of Automatic Duck. We chatted for a bit and then people started to roll in.
The pizza, sponsored by Sony, was incredible. Seriously, some of the best I've ever had. I had some veggie concoction, but Michael Vitti, head of MoPic Collective told me they also had some Cajun Shrimp pizza, but they only ordered one pie. Sounds fantastic!
The meeting started with an introduction and then Frank Garfi and Marc Fratto talked about their film Zombies Anonymous. Two words: Gratuitous violence. Their talk was pretty interesting though. They've taken the zombie story and flipped it around, making it a statement about how Arabs were treated after 9-11.
After that, Juan Martinez and Andrew Shipsides talked about Sony's EX Cameras.
Wes Plate from Automatic Duck came up and presented his products. Since there were so many editors in the audience, there was a lot of interest in his FCP products, especially.
My turn. Right before the show began, we were told we have an extra 15 minutes to fill. My presentation was planned to be exactly 20 minutes! Haha. I began asking the audience some questions about editing technique vs. software knowledge and then talked about Toolfarm. I presented Boris Continuum Complete and as usual, people are blown away by the Motion Key filter. I also had quite a bit of interest in the BCC Pan & Zoom filter which gives the Ken Burns style effect. I had a bit of time at the end, so I quickly showed Red Giant's Primatte Keyer, since keying seems to be a hot topic lately.
Next Michael Vitti showed Zaxwerks ProAnimator, then Jason Diamond showed Red Giant Magic Bullet Looks, which is always a crowd pleaser. I can't help but think that Zombies Anonymous could have benefited from a touch of Looks! Jason did a great job of presenting Looks and demo'd with some footage from a music video he had recently finished.
They also had an auction that night with tons of stuff.
Anyway, it was a good meeting and it was fun to get to New York City again. Thanks Michael Vitti for the invitation and the shirt. I love free shirts! It was great to see everyone in NYC, especially my old buddy Jim G. of the Toolfarm Expert Forum and Chris Tack, one of my former students who headed out to NYC after graduation. I also met quite a few new people from the NYC area. I saw Mario Lopez at a hot dog stand too! He's buff!
For a limited time, Boris offering a free, fully-licensed plug-in from Boris Continuum Complete 5 - Rays Cartoon, an innovative filter that creates light out of the user-defined 'cartoon edges' of an image. BCC Rays Cartoon is available for Adobe CS3, Apple Final Cut Studio 2, and Avid.
Download Rays Cartoon now! This free filter offer expires July 1, 2008.
Tutorial: Generate a Volumetric Light Effect
In this tutorial, we will use BCC Rays Cartoon to generate a volumetric lighting effect on an animated text element; BCC Rays Carton will also give the text the appearance of being made of neon lights. Then, we will use BCC Light Sweep to add a light sweep across the face of the text. Finally, to complete the effect, we will use BCC Colorize Glow to provide a soft glowing look.
Those who like making subtitles raise your hand! Adding subtitles to your project may prove daunting, time-consuming, and error-prone. However, subtitle work is much easier if you have a copy of Boris RED 4.3 in your toolbox. RED is a very capable text creation tool that provides a rich environment for static lower-thirds - the common way of treating subtitles. But how do you make hundreds of lower-thirds without going mad? Follow the easy steps in this tutorial to generate any number of subtitles automatically...
Boris RED 4.3 is now available, and is a free update for Boris RED 4.x Users.
Highlights include:
Adobe Encore Subtitle Format Support. This new support gives RED users a text-based format for import.
Improved Template Mode in Boris RED's Effects Library Browser. New buttons simplify the workflow for choosing and applying presets. In addition, title preset text can now be directly edited in the Library Browser.

Oh, they flatter me. I'm certainly can't take credit for the One Day Sales. Effects Dignitary.... I like that. Has a nice ring to it. :-)

Did you know that your video editing software includes a powerful paint system capable of creating colored glowing light strokes? But only if you run Boris RED or Avid FX as a plug-in. In this week's tutorial, we show you how to "draw with light" over any background video using Boris RED as a plug-in to your NLE...

What is the oldest text animation effect in film history? You guessed right: the credit roll. Traditionally, a long page of text is rolled from the bottom of the screen revealing line after line. In the early days of cinematography, a paper print was physically rolled before the film camera to produce this effect. Hence the name: Credit Roll.
A complete set of tools for creating credit rolls is included with Boris Graffiti, Boris RED, and Boris Blue. The same functionality is available in Boris Calligraphy which is bundled with Apple Final Cut Pro and Apple Final Cut Express and Boris Title Toolkit which is available for Adobe After Effects.
