Digieffects Ships Damage

damage boxCollection of four effects for "sabotaging your creativity"

Wilmington, NC - March 19, 2008 - Digieffects, a developer of popular software plug-ins for Adobe After Effects, Premiere Pro, Apple Final Cut Pro, and Autodesk Combustion today announced that it shipped Damage, a new set of plugins for video and film post production.

Digieffects Damage is a collection of four effects plugins designed for post production professionals who want to create an extensive variety of digital and/or analog defects/errors in your footage.

"We designed the Damage package to be the most comprehensive set of tools for creating images that look affected by digital or analog artifacts available." said Digieffects President, Robert Sharp. According to Sharp, Damage is a unique product in the marketplace. No other plugin collection is dedicated to 'damaging' a video project". Damage includes the following effects:

Blockade: Video acquired by low fidelity devices like cellular phones and PDAs is becoming more commonplace. Blockade makes your clip look like it is highly compressed and being transmitted through a very bandwidth-limited pipe. Essential for simulating internet based micro cam display or personal video communication.

Artifact: Developed to create digital defects, Artifact simulates lost DCT blocks and frame dropping, most often seen when a digital video file suffers from corruption or a satellite feed is hampered by weather. Make sure you warn clients and your house engineer that it's only an effect...

Interference: If it's television you want, traditionally you'll need some sort of interlaced field scanning. Interference creates the look of interlaced video fields, even on progressive footage or still images, adding noise, colorization and offset separately for each field.

Skew: The never-ending quest to aim the rabbit ears so that the television show looks as good once you're in your chair as it did when your hands were attached to the antenna is fast fading into the lore of old... That valuable (if under-appreciated) look is preserved in Skew. Uniquely analog/broadcast image badness like noise, image shearing, ghosts... it's all there.

Damage has a retail price of $99 and is available immediately from Digieffects and its resellers.

The Foundry delivers entire Tinderbox collection for Autodesk Combustion

9/21/2007 Permalink 0 Comments
tinderboxIBC 2007, Amsterdam, Booth #7.528, 7th September, 2007. Leading visual effects developer The Foundry today announced the debut release of its visual effects plug-ins and image-processing tools for Autodesk's Combustion (Windows only) desktop software. For the first time, The Foundry has made its entire Tinderbox collection of industry-leading plug-ins available to Combustion artists, bringing over 70 new effects within easy reach of users and enabling them to significantly enhance their VFX capabilities.

The complete collection of Tinderboxes, 1, 2, 3 and 4, feature over 70 powerful 2D visual effects. Each comes with a multitude of adjustable parameters to give everyone involved in the creation of stylish motion graphics and visual effects, access to a comprehensive toolset that can deliver unlimited creative possibilities.

"Everything we do is driven by what the market wants, and Combustion users were asking for greater visual effects firepower," commented Dr Bill Collis, CEO at The Foundry. "The Tinderbox collections, deliver just that - cutting-edge creative tools that can be easily used to create stunning effects."

The Foundry's Tinderbox range comprises four separate collections of plug-ins, including generators, creative visual effects and image-processing tools. Examples include: Sky, which generates realistic evolving skies, with controls for clouds, sun, haze, fog, atmosphere and sun flares; Water, which simulates the effect of water droplets rippling on a surface; Fire, for generating realistic animated flames; Colourist, for automatic colour correction and balancing; Starburst, which adds sparkles and highlights; BadTV, for simulating poor television reception; plus over sixty five other stylish effects.

"The Tinderbox series is a powerful collection of tools that have added amazing power and functionality to our shop." D. Jennekens, Bullseye Post.

Tinderbox - highlights:

  • Blur: is a time constant sub-pixel guassian blur. It is very fast at large and small blurs and being sub-pixel it can be smoothly animated over time.
  • Diffuse: scatters pixels in an image.
  • Sky: generates realistic evolving skies. There are controls for clouds, sun, haze, fog, atmosphere and sun flares plus numerous presets.
  • HeatHaze: simulates the layered rippling distortions that is characteristic of viewing images through hot air.
  • Rays: creates a backlit ray effect. The rays are sourced from selected areas of the image's luminance, or a matte. The colour of the rays can come from the source image or a fixed colour.
  • Glass: gives the impression of viewing an image through a layer of distorting glass.
  • Grain: adds noise to images to simulate grain. A luminance curve is provided to reduce the amount of grain added in the shadows and highlights.
  • LensFlare: generates realistic and highly customisable lens flares. There are controls for the bright spot, light rays, polygonal lens inter-reflections and much more.
  • Newsprint: converts images into their constituent dot patterns that are characteristic of printed material. Features three different print methods - Two Tone, CMY and RGB.
  • NightSky: renders the brightest 9000 stars visible from Earth. It uses real data so constellations are in their correct positions and with their correct colour. Numerous presets display the constellations.
  • Swirl: distorts an image around a point.
  • BumpShade: gives images the appearance of depth by falsely extruding the luminance or matte. Lighting is provided to accentuate the relief and parameters to soften the effect are supplied.
  • Condensation: renders thousands of water particles that clump together into water droplets. The droplets are used to distort the source image giving the appearance of water condensation on glass. The plug-in comes with lighting controls and the effect auto-animates drips.
  • EdgeDetect: finds and highlights edges in images. The result can be blended back into the original using the built-in blending methods. Quick glows and back-lit effects are possible using this technique.
  • Silk: is a digital wrinkle cream. It is used to reduce wrinkles, freckles and minor blemishes in actors' faces without having to draw mattes. It is a tolerance blur with a variable blur size that can be used to maintain edges and smooth off regions of a similar hue.
  • Lightning: generates highly realistic forked lightning and plasma bolts. There are numerous parameters to control all aspects of the bolt from fork depth to glow intensity. Optional mattes can be used to restrict the path of the plasma around objects.
  • Starfield: renders an infinite three dimensional field of stars. There are controls to look in a particular direction or at a fixed position in 3D space regardless of the motion of the observer. An auto mode is supplied to randomly tumble you through space.
  • Cartoon: flattens colour and adds lines to edges to give a cartoon feel to images.
  • Channels: a versatile tool for channel and image manipulation. It provides a range of functionality including image based arithmetic, clamping, clipping, channel rewiring and colour space conversion.
  • Flow: essentially a flood fill along a path defined by a matte. It can be used to write on text and generating animated mattes as transition effects.
  • Rain: renders 2D rain over an image. It's quick to render and gives very plausible results for many shots.
  • Snow: renders swirling, falling snow that can settle on objects.
  • SoftGlow: provides a subtle glow to images.

Availability and Pricing:

Now shipping, Tinderbox is available for artists running a Windows version of Combustion. Nodelocked licenses are available for $500.00 per box.

Existing Tinderbox for After Effects 7.0 customers who are running a Windows version of Combustion on the same machine as their After Effects 7.0 Pro can download the Combustion (Windows only) builds from The Foundry's website. Existing Tinderbox for After Effects 7.0 licenses will license the plug-ins to work on both Combustion and After Effects although customers will not be able to run both programs at the same time.

32-Bit Floating Point Color Space Support

5/08/2007 Permalink 0 Comments
We've put together a list of plug-ins that support 32-Bit Floating Point Color Space. All of the major apps are now supporting it, so if you're using After Effects 7 and above, Premiere Pro 2 and above and other apps of the last few years, you're probably okay. If both the app and the plug-in support 32-bit, you can definitely work in 32 bit.

What is 32-bit color? A quick explanation is that you usually work in a color space of 0-255 - 0 is pure black and 255 is pure white. With 32-bit color, you're working on a scale of 0-1... 0 is pure black and 1 is pure white. The trick here is that you can go higher than 1 and lower than 0 so you have a much higher dynamic range in your images and video. If you shoot RAW, this is really useful because you can pick up subtleties that are lost when you're trapped in a smaller range of luminance.

Learn more about 32-bit floating point color, link to some resources, and learn which third-party plug-ins support 32-bit color. We've included After Effects (of course!), Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, Shake, Combustion, Digital Fusion, Softimage XSI and even codecs.

If you're an expert in this area, we'd love your help to expand this resource.

Furnace is a hugely popular suite of more than 30 image-processing tools, many of which automate time-consuming processes in the creation of digital visual effects. The development team responsible for Furnace is to be honoured with a Scientific and Engineering Award® from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences® on 10th February 2007 in Los Angeles. Furnace 4 will build on this considerable platform.

Combustion artists will be able to put The Foundry's Tinderbox suite through its paces. This widely adopted suite of over 70 creative visual effects for After Effects is set to be available for artists running Combustion on Windows. Plus there will be comprehensive demonstrations of Tinder, Furnace and Keylight on a range of host platforms including Autodesk™ Media and Entertainment Systems, After Effects and Shake.

About The Foundry:

The Foundry is a London based software developer specialising in visual effects technology for the film and video markets. From an initial start-up in 1996 by Bruno Nicoletti, The Foundry has grown considerably in size and scope over the last ten years. Initially Bruno and his business partner Simon Robinson used their extensive experience in post production to produce Tinder plug-ins for Discreet's® Flame® systems - the first set of such plug-ins to be commercially available. Today the company employs more than a dozen people and develops and markets plug-ins on a range of host applications, including After Effects, Autodesk™ Media Entertainment Systems, Apple's Shake and Avid|DS.

The company now also successfully licenses its sophisticated image processing technology to third parties, expanding its scope beyond plug-ins. The Foundry has used its considerable influence to drive the development of an open standard for visual effects plug-ins known as OpenFX, which is gaining wide acceptance by host and plug-in developers, such as Grass Valley, FilmLight, Autodesk™, D2 Software and others.

Combustion importer now Universal, adds HD ability

Automatic Duck's Pro Import Cmb 1.05 is now available, bringing Universalness as well as compatibility with Combustion 4.04 on the Mac. The new version of Pro Import Cmb can now also handle Avid DNxHD media!

If you're using Combustion on the Mac, you should definitely be using the latest 4.04 release. Not only is it native on Intel Macs, it is even much faster on PPC-based systems. On the Mac side, this new release of Pro Import Cmb is compatible with Combustion 4.04, but only 4.04, not earlier versions. On the Windows side, Pro Import Cmb works with Combustion 3.02 and later.

Pro Import Cmb 1.05 is a free update for users of Pro Import Cmb. Installers for the updated plug-ins can be found on the Automatic Duck web site. Users of Combustion 4.03 or earlier on Mac should not update.

Updates to FCP plug-ins correct P2 incompatibility

Automatic Duck recently learned of a problem where the FCP P2 import module would crash FCP if either of their Pro Import FCP or Pro Export FCP plug-ins were installed. This update corrects that defect.

Users of Pro Export FCP 3.0 can update to 3.05 at no cost. Users of Pro Import FCP 2.0 can update to 2.02 at no cost. Installers for the updated plug-ins can be found at the Automatic Duck web site. Users of older versions of these plug-ins can upgrade for $195.

Check our Plug-in Finder for more Automatic Duck information.
