GLBC Trade Show: Live Video from Lansing, MI.

3/04/2010 Permalink 0 Comments share on linkedin
Yes, we know the video and audio quality are not the best, but first let me tell you about how this video was made. Technology is amazing. This was streaming live from my iPhone from the Lansing Center yesterday. They had video blocked at the convention hall so I couldn't go straight from my computer. This was recorded over 3G. Knowing that, it's not too bad, eh!

Alicia from Toolfarm is demoing Magic Bullet Looks and Video Copilot's new one, Optical Flares, from our table at the show. I finally got to see the video today. Yes, that is one extreme close-up on me! I needed a monitor on the front of the phone.

We are hoping to do some more live broadcasts from future events, like NAB. Hopefully we can work the bugs out by then and have better quality. I know we will not have wifi at NAB. It costs entirely too much.

Initiative to Focus on Evolving Editorial Workflow, Enhancing Skill Sets with Planar Tracking Skills

GUILDFORD, UK (September 29, 2009) — Imagineer Systems announced today that it has launched a series of free training sessions and has bolstered its online tutorials as part of a new customer training initiative focused on expanding editors' and VFX artists' skill sets, while also demonstrating the newest advances in motion tracking, replacement and stabilization with tools such as mocha, mocha for After Effects and mocha for Final Cut.

"We're placing a big emphasis on education and training, beginning in an aggressive way during the month of October, and continuing for as long as necessary to ensure our customers are well prepared to tackle new opportunities with new tool sets," said Ross Shain, chief marketing officer of Imagineer Systems. "The title of 'editor' is taking on new meaning as traditional editors are increasingly tasked with newer and more complex challenges - challenges that our planar tracking technology is designed to handle with ease. By taking our mocha family directly to the users in these major market cities, we're showing them first hand just how easy their workflow can be when they integrate these new skill sets."

June 22, 2009 (Los Angeles, CA & New York, NY) EditFest NY, the east coast version of American Cinema Editor's successful EditFest series, launched last weekend at The Director's Guild Theater in Manhattan. Kicking off at the DGA on June12 & 13th, the event was followed by Certification Sunday at Manhattan Edit Workshop on Sunday. The attendees, who came from New York and states surrounding, included working editors, professionals from related disciplines, industry experts and students. EditFest NY is presented by American Cinema Editors (ACE) and Manhattan Edit Workshop (MEWshop).

Over the course of the weekend, EditFest NY presented some of the best known and highly regarded east coast film editors who turned out to mingle, mentor, and present. EditFest NY kicked off on Friday with an industry insider's view of how to break into the editing business, moderated by ACE President Randy Roberts, ACE editor and Supervising Producer, Law & Order: SVU." Friday's Breaking In panel featured ACE members Bill Pankow, Troy Takaki, Michael Berenbaum, Scott Brock, Lee Percy, and Plummy Tucker in a candid discussion of the rigors of starting and maintaining a long-lasting editing career. The panel was followed by an opening night gala, a wall-to-wall party where panelists from every EditFest NY panel mingled with rapt attendees. Saturday's panels featured a who's who of editing talent and focused on key areas of interest:

  • Television - Kate Sanford, Meg Reticker, Troy Takaki, Michael Berenbaum and Alexander Hall, moderated by editor and author Bobbie O'Steen
  • Comedy - Ken Eluto, Stephen Rotter, Anne McCabe, moderated by MEWShop founder Josh Apter

  • Feature Film - Chris Tellefson, Jeffrey Wolfe, Tim Squyres, Brian Kates, Craig McKay, and Jay Rabinowitz, moderated by American Cinema Editor Vincent Lobruto

The presenters shared equal parts inspiration, insight and knowledge that only such an esteemed group can deliver.

MEWshop hosted Certification Sunday at their mid-town headquarters, which offered hands on review followed by the certification test for Final Cut Pro. They also held Re-Tool Bootcamp, an intensive three-hour seminar demystifying key areas of the digital media pipeline while filling in knowledge gaps along the way. Each workshop was sold-out.

EditFest NY 2010 will take place June 11-13, 2010 in New York, details on locations, events and panelists will be forthcoming. EditFest LA is slated for August 8th & 9th, 2009 at Universal Studi"os in Los Angeles. "

I will be presenting on Sunday, May 17 at KAFI at the Kalamazoo Valley Community College (room CNM 175) in Kalamazoo, Michigan, about... you guessed it.... greenscreen. I'll be on from 11:00 AM - 12:15 PM. For more information, go to the KAFI website

greenscreen made easyAlso, a very nice review from Robert Grant at Sci-Fi-London:
Written with the indie filmmaker in mind 'Greenscreen Made Easy' follows a beautifully logical path through the entire process of pre-production, production and post-production from buying or building your greenscreen (or blue, and it explains that as well) through shooting your backgrounds, lighting for greenscreen, positioning your actors, techniques for clean keys, prepping for post-production, getting rid of artifacts, different plug-ins, blending, colouring, making it believable and using CGI backgrounds.

5/14/2009 Permalink 0 Comments share on linkedin
London, May 12th 2009 - CVMP, the European Conference on Visual Media Production, is now announcing its call for submissions. The conference takes place on 12th and 13th November 2009 at the BFI Southbank, London. Now in the sixth year of CVMP, a new management team is injecting fresh momentum to this unique event, which brings together practitioners in media production from the film, broadcast and games industries with leading academics and researchers in imaging and graphics. The two-day conference will provide a dynamic forum for the exchange of knowledge between researchers and media industry specialists working at the cutting-edge of visual media production and delivery.

CVMP has traditionally been held at the IET (Institution of Engineering and Technology), but has a new, larger venue for 2009, and a dedicated team that will develop and expand the event and associated activities. The conference chairman is Dr Oliver Grau, lead technologist at BBC Research & Development, with Adrian Hilton, from University of Surrey, the programme chair. The CVMP organising committee is comprised of Bill Collis, CEO at The Foundry, Simon Robinson chief scientist at The Foundry, Anil Kokaram of Trinity College, Ireland, Tom Evans of Wavecrest Systems Ltd, and Dr Graham Thomas, principal research engineer at BBC Research & Development. Conference secretary is Abi Bowman, project manager at The Foundry.

This year, the latest research developments will be presented together with real-world, industry applications, combining to deliver a unique melting pot of ideas and experience. The event promises to be fascinating and informative, with a line up that already includes Matt Welford, head of compositing at Weta Digital (The Day The Earth Stood Still, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, King Kong, The Lord of the Rings trilogy), Professor Marc Pollefeys from ETHZ and Dr Toni Mateos of Barcelona Media. Special sessions this year are 'Advanced Technology in Post Production', and 'Capturing 3D Worlds'.

CVMP will also address the increasing demand for 3D stereoscopic content and delivery for emerging platforms such as e-cinema, high-resolution home displays and interactive media, which are all fuelling the development of new technology and approaches.

The 'Call for Papers' is now live at www.cvmp-conference.org for those who would like to submit papers on innovative research and practical applications related to media production, along with a comprehensive list of suggested topics. Registration for CVMP 2009, (Full rate: £300 / Retired/Student rate £150) is also live on the CVMP website.

October 30, 2008 (Burbank, CA) - HD EXPO ended on a high note today after the two day conference and exhibition attracted a capacity crowd to its trade show floor, panels and educational offerings. Wednesday's panels featured an acquisition to post workflow with RED, featuring Ted Schilowitz and a cadre of cinematographers, producers and post experts, and featuring never-seen-before footage. Also on Wednesday, American Cinema Editors presented "See What's Coming - Meet the Editors of The Hottest New and Upcoming Releases," a panel discussion featuring top editors Paul Hirsch, ACE, Nancy Richardson, ACE, Terilyn Shropshire, ACE, and Myron Kerstein, moderated by Carolyn Giardina. On Thursday, HD EXPO launched the Second Annual 3D Day, a highly anticipated series of screenings and expert discussions about 3D. Industry leader Vince Pace ("Avatar," "Journey to the Center of the Earth," "U2 3D"), led two panels focusing on 3D. "Myth Busting 3D: Stop the Myths. Hear the Truth.", which featured director Eric Brevig, ("Journey to the Center of the Earth"), Doug Merrifield, ("Hannah Montana"), Glen McPherson, ASC, ("Final Destination 4"), Phil Orlins, (ESPN), and Eric Torres ("Final Destination 4"), explored and explained the facts and in some cases the fiction of 3D production. Pace also took the audience through a first hand -discussion of the exciting and challenging deployment of Sports in 3D. 3D screenings accompanied the panels. Peter Anderson, ASC was joined by Doug Bankston from American Cinematographer in a One-on-One conversation exploring Anderson's extensive 3D experience including "U2 3D," and a number of groundbreaking 3D public space projects.

Toolfarm Events Calendar... here's what we're doing...

9/25/2008 Permalink 0 Comments share on linkedin
We have a lot going on in the coming couple of months. Here's a brief rundown.

Sept 29 - Boris Continuum Chroma Key Offer Ends

Oct 1-3 - Final Cut Studio Conference, Mt. Pleasant, MI.
I'll be teaching some Apple Motion Seminars at the conference. As far as conferences go, this one is very inexpensive and there are excellent classes being held. Plus, Mt. Pleasant is home to the world famous Sweet Onion restaurant. :-)

Oct 8-9 - Rocky Mountain VidExpo, Denver, CO.
Toolfarm will be running a booth at the show. Stop by and say hi to Alicia and Michele from Toolfarm (that's me!). Also, if you register by October 2, you can get into the exhibit hall, the keynote address and some of the seminars for free.

Oct 12-15 - Motion08 Conference (special offer expires September 30), Albuquerque, NM.
Use that link to get a fantastic special offer. Save $600! For real! Trish and Chris Meyer, Mark Coleran and others will be presenting so this is a big show not to be missed. Not only that, the NM Hot Air Balloon Festival is at the same time. Toolfarm may have a booth at the show. We're in this little contest and we're very close to getting in.

Oct 13-17 - MG Fest, Orlando, FL
Toolfarm is a sponsor of the MG Fest. It's a traveling show this year and will be hitting loads of US cities. I'll be teaching some classes at the Chicago stop in January. Nothing like Chicago in January...

Oct 24 - The Nobody Hole Contest Ends
The contest just launched last night! This is something like we've never done before and we're very excited about it. There are boatloads of prizes. Check it out!

Oct 29 - Adobe CS4 Expected Ship Date
Can you wait that long!?

IBC FCP SuperMeet Report

9/14/2008 Permalink 0 Comments share on linkedin
Right now I'm sitting in the audience waiting for them to pull my raffle ticket out for something really great and hoping it isn't something I already have :-) Digieffects is giving away 4 $1200 plug-in packages and Eyescream Factory is currently being pulled.

The SuperMeet was VERY successful. It was really cool to meet up with our European customers... and many people who are AE users and FCP users who had never heard of Red Giant or Toolfarm (can you believe that!) Everyone was so nice and had really great questions for us. It was a lot of fun and very worthwhile to attend. Here are a few photos.

FCP SuperMeet

L to R: Miguel de Olaso (aka MacGregor), Beth Manning from Red Giant, Michele Yamazaki from Toolfarm, Philip Bloom and Steve from France.

Moving Pictures Collective Meeting Report

6/18/2008 Permalink 0 Comments share on linkedin
I was invited to the June Motion Picture Collective Meeting on plug-ins. It was held at Pratt Institute in New York City.

I got there about 45 minutes early and there was no one there! After about 30 minutes I started to worry that I came to the wrong place. As I was walking around I ran into Wes Plate of Automatic Duck. We chatted for a bit and then people started to roll in.

The pizza, sponsored by Sony, was incredible. Seriously, some of the best I've ever had. I had some veggie concoction, but Michael Vitti, head of MoPic Collective told me they also had some Cajun Shrimp pizza, but they only ordered one pie. Sounds fantastic!

The meeting started with an introduction and then Frank Garfi and Marc Fratto talked about their film Zombies Anonymous. Two words: Gratuitous violence. Their talk was pretty interesting though. They've taken the zombie story and flipped it around, making it a statement about how Arabs were treated after 9-11.

After that, Juan Martinez and Andrew Shipsides talked about Sony's EX Cameras.

Wes Plate from Automatic Duck came up and presented his products. Since there were so many editors in the audience, there was a lot of interest in his FCP products, especially.

My turn. Right before the show began, we were told we have an extra 15 minutes to fill. My presentation was planned to be exactly 20 minutes! Haha. I began asking the audience some questions about editing technique vs. software knowledge and then talked about Toolfarm. I presented Boris Continuum Complete and as usual, people are blown away by the Motion Key filter. I also had quite a bit of interest in the BCC Pan & Zoom filter which gives the Ken Burns style effect. I had a bit of time at the end, so I quickly showed Red Giant's Primatte Keyer, since keying seems to be a hot topic lately.

Next Michael Vitti showed Zaxwerks ProAnimator, then Jason Diamond showed Red Giant Magic Bullet Looks, which is always a crowd pleaser. I can't help but think that Zombies Anonymous could have benefited from a touch of Looks! Jason did a great job of presenting Looks and demo'd with some footage from a music video he had recently finished.

They also had an auction that night with tons of stuff.

Anyway, it was a good meeting and it was fun to get to New York City again. Thanks Michael Vitti for the invitation and the shirt. I love free shirts! It was great to see everyone in NYC, especially my old buddy Jim G. of the Toolfarm Expert Forum and Chris Tack, one of my former students who headed out to NYC after graduation. I also met quite a few new people from the NYC area. I saw Mario Lopez at a hot dog stand too! He's buff!

Michele Yamazaki of Toolfarm demoing in NYC

6/02/2008 Permalink 0 Comments share on linkedin
Yep, that's right. I'll be at the Motion Picture Collective meeting demoing Boris Continuum Complete and maybe Boris Final Effects Complete if there is time.

From the MPC newsletter:

Toolfarm has been taking a proactive community approach to EFX for a while now with the Plugged-In podcasts, the Experts Forums and their great compendium of plug-ins & software. Michele is the VP of Marketing for Toolfarm and is hence responsible for the awesome, 50% off One Day Sales (I keep missing). If not for the pizza or the auction, you must make it a point to meet the Software Diva, the Effects Dignitary, Michele Y and her Boris FX demo.

Oh, they flatter me. I'm certainly can't take credit for the One Day Sales. Effects Dignitary.... I like that. Has a nice ring to it. :-)

The Moving Pictures Collective NYC's June '08 is scheduled for Thursday, 12 June 2008, 6pm-8:30pm at Pratt Manhattan, 2nd floor.

They have a full card this evening with a bunch of great plug-in developers and Sony's EX-3. The meeting will start promptly at 6:00pm with pizza. Seating is limited to first come, first serve, but the meeting is open to members, subscribers and their friends, so please join us.

Pratt's Manhattan campus is located at 144 West 14th St between 6th and 7th Avenues on the south side of the street. Best train stations are Union Square (4/5/6, Q/W + N/R), 1/2/3 at 14th St (7th Ave), the F/V or L at 14th Street (6th Ave) or the A/C/E at 14th Street (8th Ave). Google Map.

NYC Adobe Event - May 29

5/20/2008 Permalink 0 Comments share on linkedin
Dennis Radeke is organizer of the Adobe event later this month on May 29 near B&H at the New Yorker Hotel's Crystal Ballroom on the 2nd floor. There will be two sessions, 11am-3:30pm and 3:30pm-8pm.

From Dennis' Blog, The Genesis Project:
Additionally, rather than have the event be static where you sit and we talk, it is a twofold event. In one area, you'll have a large room where many of the vendors will present their products and workflows throughout the day in rapid fire 20 minute presentations. I hope that one of the highlights to these 20 minute demos will be a 20 minute technology preview demo of some stuff we're working on that I think you will find VERY helpful.

The event will have onsite representation from Adobe, AJA, Blackmagic Design, B&H, CalDigit, DigiEffects, GenArts, GridIron, Matrox, Maxon, MOTU, Wacom and Zoomin Online (aka Magnet Media).

They're giving away LOADS of prizes from these sponsors too. If you're in NYC at the end of May, this is a free event. Don't miss it. Register now!

New York Post|Production Conference is back!

5/06/2008 Permalink 0 Comments share on linkedin
The New York Post|Production Conference will be held from November 11 - 13. I went the first two years and it was really cool. Much smaller and lower key than NAB in Las Vegas, plus focused more on what I'm interested in.

Cutting-edge technical training sessions will be presented by an elite team of manufacturer-authorized instructors, developers and power users. This event is for professionals at all levels, and is the East Coast's largest resource for the latest and most up-to-date production, post-production and content delivery education. With the recent updates to Apple Final Cut Studio 2 and Adobe Creative Suite 3, there has never been a better time to take advantage of this one stop training opportunity.

Going to NAB?

2/18/2008 Permalink 0 Comments share on linkedin
I wouldn't miss it for the world! The IMUG Media Motion Ball and meeting up with our vendors and customers for a couple of days is worth the trip. It's a shame Apple won't be there. Last year I demo'd FxPlug plug-ins at their booth and had a great time. I'll miss them, but I can imagine it must be crazy expensive to rent booth space and pay for transportation and hotel rooms for all of their employees. I can't blame them. They'll be missed but I'll still be there.
