The Wishing Well by Rod Maxwell - Behind the Scenes

4/30/2008 Permalink 0 Comments
The Wishing Well is a short experimental one-man film by artist and actor Rod Maxwell. He shot the entire film by himself in his livingroom in a small 4'x4' homemade greenscreen. He did EVERYTHING including the script, directing acting, makeup, prosthetics, efffects. The video below is a trailer for the film and a 'Behind the scenes' video. The film has one several awards, too.... just check out the bottom of his website! It's really damn impressive. I was impressed.

A Conversation about Greenscreen with Daniel Land, Co-Director of Dirty Trousers

3/31/2008 Permalink 0 Comments
Dirty Trousers

This is part two of an ongoing series with Dirty Trousers filmmakers, as we follow them through the post production process.

In this interview we specifically talk about shooting green screen and the keying process. Daniel Land gives us some insight on what it is like to work on a film filled with effects with a limited amount of time and budge, and what it takes to bring their vision to the big screen.

Iron Man Trailer

3/01/2008 Permalink 0 Comments
Robert Downey, Jr... boy, was he a total babe in the 80s. He still looks pretty good, considering all of the drugs he's done. His latest film, Iron Man, looks highly entertaining, an 'explosive' film, where he turns into an awesome flying robot. Now, if that isn't a recipe for success, what is? Plus, I'm a sucker for those high-tech computer screen holograms that float in the air, projected onto nothing and this trailer shows some nice examples of that type of work. This looks awesome!

This looks incredibly awesome. Great effects, a quality screenplay and Harrison Ford not looking half bad for being as old as my grandfather.

Mirrormask- a VFX treat

MirrorMask

Designed and directed by Dave McKean, Mirrormask is stunning and chock-full of visual effects. Dave McKean is one of my favorite artists, and I was excited to see the film retained much of the look and feel of his work.

History of America by MK12

12/07/2007 Permalink 0 Comments
history of america

The History of Americawas mainly shot over greenscreen by Kansas City's MK12. Its a very stylized film about the history of the United States. From the HistoryOfAmerica.tv website:

Centuries of campfire stories have spun America's history into a fanciful tale filled with myths and half truths. MK12's History of America is here to set the record straight. Set against the warm sin of Las Vegas and the cold vacuum of space, this is the true story behind the story -- one which the epic struggle between the Astronauts and the cowboys as they fight for life, liberty and justice for all.

Watch a Trailer and teaser here.

Perseopolis Teaser 2

12/06/2007 Permalink 0 Comments
I'm not sure how I missed this one. I LOVED Perseopolis. I've read three of Marjane Satrapi's graphic novels and they are FANTASTIC. The story is so different from anything I've ever read. It's very funny and I learned so much about Persian culture. I'm really looking forward to seeing Perseopolis on the big screen. Check out the Perseoplis MySpace. I don't understand much French, though.

Dirty Trousers Trailer

10/25/2007 Permalink 0 Comments
Dirty TrousersI was talking to Tony Griffin who is one of the guys who runs the Thriller! Chiller! Festival in Grand Rapids, MI. He told me about a Michigan film maker and digital animator, Dan Land, who would be speaking at the festival about his film, Dirty Trousers, discussing techniques used by featuring before and after clips of his film as examples of digital animation using Adobe After Effects. (Michigan, represent!)

I was very suprised when I saw the trailer. It has a film noir feel, in black and white with spot color and lots of old film effects. It looks freakin' awesome.

If you're interested in checking out the film and filmmakers, the presentation is at the Wealthy Theatre, Saturday, October 27, 2007, 11:30am and $5 will get you in the door. I'm hoping I can interview the filmmaker or tape his presentation and put it on the website. More on the Thriller! Chiller! Festival. They're playing Black Sheep on Friday night!

Across the Universe Trailer

9/10/2007 Permalink 0 Comments
across the universeI caught the trailer for Across the Universe on tv tonight during Colbert Report and it looks awesome. As the comments on Slashfilm read, I also have been impressed with the musicals of the past few years. Loved Moulin Rouge and this one looks even better. I'm a huge fan of the Beatles and these renditions are excellent. I hate it when Beatles songs are ruined. I love the "Sadie" rendition of "Oh, Darlin;". Gotta be Sexy Sadie. I've noticed that the characters are named after characters from Beatles tunes (Prudence, Jude, etc.)

It looks like it has a strong plot too. The effects look pretty damn cool. I'm digging the quick shot of Uncle Sam. This one is a must see for me.

Be Kind Rewind Theatrical Trailer by Michel Gondry

8/10/2007 Permalink 0 Comments
Be Kind RewindBe Kind Rewind, a movie coming out this fall from Michel Gondry, stars Jack Black. The trailer has some fun bad video tape effects and cool titles with little stickers on VHS tapes, plus some clever animated remakes of films - like the puppets in the remake of Jurrasic Park.

Okay, who rents video tapes anymore! I hope this is supposed to be set in the 80s.

The House of Flying Daggers Trailer

5/22/2007 Permalink 0 Comments
House of Flying DaggersThe House of Flying Daggers came out in 2004, but I caught it on Spike tonight. I was blown away by the visual effects. The soldiers running through the tops of the bamboo stalks and the impossible flying daggers... phenomenal. Sure, it's a lot like the effects of Crouching Tiger, but still freakin' cool. The colors are breathtaking and cinematography is awe-inspiring. I love the greens in the costumes and bamboo forest. The snow at the end, which I read was just a freak October snowstorm in the Ukraine where they shot, worked to the directors benefit as a beautiful contrast to the blood and symbolic to the end of life and love. Also Zyang Ziyi's performance as a blind girl is top drawer.

I highly recommend this film, even if it's 3 years too late ;-) Sadly, the last film I've seen in the theatre was "Over the Hedge" I have a huge list of films to see. I'm midway through The Motorcycle Diaries which is also a cinematic feast for the eyes.

Strange Frame is a unique, lush computer animated film with the tagline "One musician's journey to save her lover from a killer few can survive: STARDOM"

"Mangolo", who is working on the film, posted a question to our Forum about the Liquify plug-in in After Effects. The trailer looks fascinating. Check out the Strange Frame website.

MK12: Stranger Than Fiction Opening Sequence

Stranger Than FictionStranger than Fiction Opening Sequence was done by MK12, who never disappoint with their innovative and clever work. I remember a similar type of effect in Fight Club in the Ikea scene, but tops it.

I have yet to see this film, although it's on my "Want to See" list. This is another sent in by Dru Nget.

Sunshine, a new sci-fi film from Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, 28 Days) looks like a phenomenal action flick.

There are also video interviews with Sunshine's Director, Danny Boyle, and the Visual Effects Supervisor, Tom Wood discuss the challenges of "visualising the power and the beauty of the Sun".

I don't know when this is coming out.

Frank Miller's 300 Trailer

10/06/2006 Permalink 0 Comments
300From Apple.com: "Based on the epic graphic novel by Frank Miller, 300 is a ferocious retelling of the ancient Battle of Thermopylae in which King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) and 300 Spartans fought to the death against Xerxes and his massive Persian army. Facing insurmountable odds, their valor and sacrifice inspire all of Greece to unite."

Just a bet, 300 is going to be a gigantic hit at the Box Office. Looks like an amazing effects extravaganza.

Jason Wen's absolutely incredible sci-fi animation, f8, was released on DVD today. From AnimationStrip.com "Using a combination of Lightwave 3D animation software with the Project: Messiah plug-in for rendering, Photoshop and Nuendo, the film was composited in After Effects and edited in Adobe Premiere." There's more info about the animation here. There are also high-res stills from the film.

The Call of Cthulhu Teaser

12/24/2004 Permalink 0 Comments
The HP Lovecraft Historical Society has released The Call of Cthulhu Teaser. It's a black and white short film with an orchestral score and intertitles and looks impressively like the films from the 20's.

I'm curious to know what sort of software was used to make the film look effect. DigiEffects Cinelook or Magic Bullet Suite would be my guess.

If you know anything else about this film, please leave a comment.

What the Bleep Do We Know!? - The Movie

12/21/2004 Permalink 1 Comments
What the Bleep Do We Know!? The title makes you think it could be another "Dude, Where's My Car?" type of romp, but this looks like Stephen Hawkins and the Matrix creators got together and had a baby.

According to the site: "With over 300 Visual Effects (VFX) shots, WT*DWK!? could be classified a special effects movie. Not only are there a plethora of shots, but the style and techniques of the shots are plentiful as well. There are pure Computer Generated Image (CGI) shots of the mysterious Quantum world and the interior of the brain. There are composited shots of the sub atomic world interacting with our actors, as well as little animated characters lampooning our emotional foibles."

The animators, who come from all over the globe, spent over a year putting it together.
