I didn't realize that YouTube allowed you to do this, but if you go to the YouTube page for this video there is a pulldown menu for viewing in different 3D styles. This is cool!

Powered by FxFactory; Stereo3D Toolbox is a plug-in designed to work with Adobe After Effects CS3 / CS4, Apple Final Cut Pro, Apple Motion and Apple Final Cut Express applications. With Stereo3D Toolbox, artists can easily output their media to a wide range of Stereoscopic 3D formats (side by side, over/under, checkerboard, interlace, anaglyph) as well as manage the demuxing of side by side, interlace and over/under formattingBeth Marchant talks with Tim Dashwood, creator of the Dashwood Stereo3D Toolbox plugin.

You had some help from Noise Industries' FxFactory architecture.

Yes, I was using the FxFactory suite of tools for other projects. For those who don't know, FxFactory Pro allows the end user to design plug-ins in a simpler way than a programmer would do it. Basically, you don't write code because you're using Apple's Quartz Composer, their node-based visual programming language.

Review: Idustrial Revolution ParticleMetrix

8/26/2009 Permalink 0 Comments share on linkedin
particle metrixA really nice review of this 'FUN' plug-in from idustrial revolution.

If you want to have some real fun with ParticleMetrix and get a sense of its power, give it a run in Apple Motion so you can make use of Motion's real-time interaction. You can apply the filter, loop the playback and tweak away, all with real-time feedback. OK, so you might bring your graphics card to its knees. But is it ever fun! In fact, I think that's one of the best words to use when describing ParticleMetrix: fun.

Check out the review by Scott Simmons over at Studio Daily. I highly recommend that you download a free demo of ParticleMetrix here. Then, after you see how fun and cool it is, you can buy it from Toolfarm and cash in on our everyday 5% discount!

Review: Noise Industries SUGARfx HUD

Publisher: Sugar FX/Noise Industries
Platform: Mac Only
Description: Plug-in for targeting and video simulation

award of superiorityRemember when you got your first bicycle? How you couldn't wait to show your friends? HUD (Heads Up Display) from SUGARfx will have the same effect on you. If you have any leanings towards sci-fi, adventure, espionage or covert operations in your work, HUD will make you feel like a kid in a candy store.

SUGARfx puts plug-in usability first and then tucks so many cool little features into HUD that you will be playing with it for some time and rethinking your storylines to include using it.

HUD is designed to be used with After Effects and Final Cut Studio/Motion and iMovie. Regrettably, it's a Mac only plug-in that is managed by the excellent Noise Industries plug-in manager called FX Factory. The Quartz Composer's visual abilities of the Mac platform are the reason that this plug-in in not cross platform so I don't even know if there is a way to make it cross-platform compatible in the future. As such, PC users might just have to switch to Mac to get their hands on it.

Ease of Use
I love it when developers actually come from the real world. The folks at SUGARfx have done an outstanding job of making our lives easier. Absolutely everything is modifiable, easy to work with and key frame. The plug-in comes with 3 foundational settings: Target, Binoculars, and OSD (On Screen Display). Each of these core areas has a wealth of options and abilities. But here's the cool part: you aren't presented with the controls for these options until you enable them. At the very top of the core areas, users are simply shown a preset pull down and check boxes that enable features. Upon activating a feature, the related controls are then displayed. Payoff = no long list of controls to deal with unless you actually need them.

HUD
The HUD Binocular core function come with a good array of customizable presets to get users going. In this example, a sequence created with Vue xStream of an attack helicopter turning for attack is easily integrated into the story. The plug-in takes the original image and then adds the requisite coloring. The user can adjust zoom, focus, positioning and size of all elements. Meanwhile, all of the "noise" text and numeric data presentations are dynamically changed and updated. Sweet.

The control sets for each option are clearly labeled (important when you have a multitude of options enabled) and are comprised of a 1-3 sliders and/or input areas for color blending, rotation or anything else relevant to that specific feature.

Users can either use the numeric input controls for moving the various widgets and gizmos around the frame or simply click on their respective anchor points and drag them to wherever they are needed in the shot. Items like dynamic "noise" text continually change line length and wrap. Gizmos spin with smooth variations. On-screen data updates automatically when zooming or working with focus.

All this to say that much automated sophistication is simply laying in the wings and waiting for the user to engage it if desired. The automation can be controlled to the users' content. It just doesn't get much nicer than that.

The actual use of HUD is really a documentation-free endeavor. However, if you want to pick up some of the finer points of using the HUD, the .pdf 'documentation is brief, excellent and there are some online videos available for even easier learning. The one area that is worth reading up on is how to create your own artwork for inclusion into the HUD Binocular capabilities.

HUD
Additional preset/starting points for the Binocular option includes High Tech, Infrared and Thermal imaging.

Depth of Options
My biggest surprise was the depth of options (and options within options) that are neatly hidden from the user until enabled. This is yet another area where HUD shines brightly. For example, in the Binocular core setting, in addition to the wide array of video and camera effects at your fingertips, users can also overlay and animate their own imagery. All you could want and more.

Essentially, all of the iconography, data-points, registration marks are appropriately available for the core option selected. The OSD core lets you select from histograms, battery low, variable interference, different reticules and more. It's like taking the OSD from multiple camcorders and putting them all at your finger tips for you to choose from.

Time markers and data associated metrics are just a click away in the film modes and actually track time. They can also be set to unique starting times of your choice and then progress in real-time.

Text is as flexible as the fonts you have in your system. Size, placement, color and blending are all controllable.

HUD
The core Target option lets users choose from a wide collection of gadgets and items that self animation - or not - depending on you needs. Everything is adjustable. In this example, a radar sweep was activated and a grid pattern was enabled to reinforce the target-lock notification.

There are enough spinning gadgets and whizmos to choose from that any self-respecting alpha geek will be smiling. Iconography is available from pull down selectors within each of the categories that it is available in. And for the Target and Binocular modes, a wealth of sensical and nonsensical information items plus widgets are at your disposal.

Presets are nice, but saving your own customization is even nicer. You can easily create your own presets to ensure consistency between HUD implementations with the click of a button. Super sweet.

While the Binocular mode allows you to add some of your own imagery, I was left wanting the same feature in both Target and OSD modes. While there are a bevy of options available, duh no surprise, us creative types want more. I'm a total newb at using the Quartz Composer from Apple, so I don't really trust myself with creating an "improvement". However, the ability to add some iconography that would lock to animation features already built in would be nice.

HUD
OSD let's users start with either film or video presets if desired. From there, options, icons and "appropriate" features become available to choose from for further customizing a shot.

Performance
When you engage HUD and begin using many of its options, you are asking your computer to do a good deal of work. These are sophisticated abilities and they do exact a render-time penalty. Considering that these effects are probably confined to short screen time, the calculation and render issues are not prohibitive by any means - just something to be aware of. So, performance both real-time and render-time is highly contingent upon the user's computer.

In fact, on screen updates while preparing your work takes awhile, too, unless you are blessed with the latest in quad-core technology. That can be a little frustrating when accustomed to more instant real-time interaction afforded by other plug-ins, but to be fair, HUD is simply doing more than most of the other plug-ins that I own.

The creation experience is very good and the end results are first rate - regardless of your computer's abilities.

Value
At $79, HUD costs more than a sandwich. If you're not currently planning any targeting or Cloverfield types of presentations than getting HUD is strictly a matter of how much disposable coin you have in your pocket. It is a one trick pony for sure.

That said, this is another one of those plug-ins that pays for itself in one use. The sophistication that HUD brings to the table lets users create and finesse looks in seconds that would require an hour or more to pull together by other means. The real claim-to-fame for HUD is the animation capabilities that are built into it. It's one thing to hack together some static artwork for a brief screen presence, but adding animation that leaves your audience thinking, "Wow, that's really cool", is another.

Additionally, if you have "http://toolfarm.stores.yahoo.net/dida10.html">Digieffects Damage plug-in, you can create some excellent targeting imagery with extra "issues" easily. The video distortion effects in SUGARfx HUD are confined to the source imagery/video itself and not the on screen widgets and icons. For truly cataclysmic display failures, you'll need some extra help.

Final Comments
I like plug-ins; they save time. However, HUD not only saves time, it's just flat-out fun to play with. If you like shiny things and are easily swooned by techno-cool then you're already salivating and I don't need to say anything more.

I would say this is an essential plug-in for anybody that needs what it does. There simply isn't another way to produce what HUD does as fast or with the sophistication as it does.

4/28/2009 Permalink 0 Comments share on linkedin
Back in January I presented the "Top 10 Must-Have Plug-ins for Adobe After Effects" at MGFest in Chicago. The presentation was only 22 minutes so that really didn't give me much of a chance to show off the capabilities of the plug-ins and I wanted to do a feature on this for Toolfarm with lots of movie samples.

Several people have asked me about the list and wanting to republish it, so here it is. (If you want to republish the list, go for it, just please link back to Toolfarm). First, a bit about the criteria and some notes.

  1. The plug-in should be a single plug-in and so I tried to avoid big plug-in packages when possible. There will be notes included about the product when needed. The plug-in had to be unique, fast, powerful or something I've used a lot and it fits into my workflow. If it hit 3 of the criteria, I would consider it for the list.
  2. This is MY opinion, not because I was paid to say this or because the plug-ins come from a manufacturer that gives us higher margins. It's very tough to seem unbiased, but I want you to know, it is all my opinion here.
  3. These are in no particular order (but I do have a clear favorite).
  4. The list was created in January 2009 and a few new plug-ins that I really like were not included in the list. I guess they'll have to wait for 2010.
Without further ado.....

1 Red Giant Primatte Keyer

Description: A Perfect Key the First Time! The simplest, fastest green-screen tool available that even extracts keys from challenging DV and low lit sources by sampling the background color and clicking.

Why I Like It: With my book about keying (Greenscreen Made Easy) out on the market, I've been doing quite a few seminars on keying. People always ask which keyer I like the best. I've been showing Primatte quite a bit and did two presentations at NAB at the Red Giant booth. I find that Primatte is easy to show because of how it works. It's not a matter of fiddling with a bunch of numbers to get the right settings, but dragging around your mouse and clicking big buttons. It works in a very visual manner, which is perfect for artists (who aren't engineers). Also, Primatte has everything I need in one tool.

  • Easy to use and very fast
  • Built in DV Deartifactor, Spill Suppression, Color Matching and Light Wrap
Cost: $499 (Buy | Try)

Sample:

2 RE:Vision Effects ReelSmart Motion Blur

Description: ReelSmart Motion Blur Pro automatically tracks every pixel in a sequence and blurs based on calculated motion.

Why I like it: Again, with the greenscreen book, I've realized how incredible this tool really is! Have you ever tried to key footage with motion blur? Not too easy and the results aren't usually very good. You can shoot with a high shutter speed but then you lose all of that natural looking motion blur. This is where RSMB steps in and adds that natural looking footage back into your shot, without blurring the whole frame, just the movement in the video.

  • Also great for compositing 3D, which I have in the example below.
  • RSMB has adjustable tracking points for problematic footage
  • Supports 32-bit float in AE
  • Inexpensive

Cost: $149.95 (Buy | Try)

Sample:

3 Synthetic Aperture Color Finesse

Description: Telcine-style color correction within After Effects, Premiere Pro & Final Cut Pro, giving you full creative control over the color and look of your images.

Why I like it: Color Finesse gives you total control of image, much more than just curves, levels, hue/saturation. You can make adjustments in HSL, RGB, CMY, and YCbCr color spaces, and have individual control over shadows, midtones, and highlights, as well as overall correction.

  • Has 32 Bit Float support... so why is this important? It allows you to have much more flexibility and allows AE to be used in higher end productions and more cinematic work. You will have more contrast between your blacks and whites. For details on working in 32-bit Float, check out Stu Maschwicz's article on 32-bit float workflow in AE on fxguide.
  • It ships with After Effects so it won't cost any extra.

Cost: $595 (Buy | No demo at Toolfarm, but you probably already have it if you have AE)

Sample: Just a couple of screenshots...

4 Red Giant Knoll Light Factory

Description: Light effects from John Knoll for photo-realistic sunsets and motion graphics.

Why I like it: Maybe this is just the kid in me, but plug-ins get bonus points for being fun to play with and easy to use and KLF is both. With KLF, you get natural looking lens flares and loads of great presets that are customizable. I really like the fact that you can set up an obscuration layer so that when an object moves in front of the flare, it dims or turns off.

  • Tons of variety for one type of effect (not a one trick pony)
  • Use presets or the Lens Editor to build your own flares.
  • Auto tracking
  • As with all of the Red Giant products, one license works in multiple host applications on one machine, so you don't need to buy multiple copies.

Cost: $399 (Buy | Try)

Samples:

A nice sample I snagged from YouTube.

5 Zaxwerks ProAnimator

Description: Create 3D text and primitives without having to learn a 3D program.

Why I like it: I've attempted to learn a true 3D program and give up after about 30 minutes. I have bad depth perception (that's why I used to hit so many things with the car). ProAnimator makes it so easy to create slick looking 3D elements directly in AE and with a short learning curve. I picked up the plug-in quickly without using the manual (that is how I roll).

  • Nice presets
  • Track the After Effects camera and lights
  • Export wireframe versions for that techie, futuristic computer environment look
  • Impressive looking 3D renders

Cost: $695 (Buy | Try)

Samples: Here's a quick sample I did for a test for a client a couple of years ago. It was composited over video and 3D screens.

And a nice example that was tagged ProAnimator on Vimeo:

DIGITAL MEDIA - LOGO - Barking Abbey School from Barking Abbey School on Vimeo.

6 Trapcode Particular

Description: 3D Particle system that produces various natural effects like smoke, fire and sparks and also organic and techie-style graphical effects that are very useful for motion graphics design.

Why I like it: I love how it looks and all of the presets. I'm a sucker for presets. I don't read manuals so presets help me get going. I just modify them until I get something I like. Particular has loads of fantastic presets, plus you can preview them and what you've created realtime in the Effect Controls window.

  • Particular is tightly integration with AE's Camera & lights - oh, wait until you see version 2!
  • Particular has a complex physics engine, allowing you to fully control your particles, again, new improvements in v2.
  • Inexpensive, especially considering all it can do. Particular is one of those tools you can use on a multitude of jobs and it will never get old.

Cost: $299 (Buy | Try)

Samples: A couple of nice samples on Vimeo:

awesome rain from versa on Vimeo.

Velvære Circle from Mario Brauer on Vimeo.

7 Digieffects Damage

Description:
Damage creates an extensive variety of digital and/or analog defects/errors in your footage.

Why I like it: It's another plug-in that is fun to play with! I've used the plugin for many creative purposes - interference with a hologram popping on, a luma matte for a gradient wipe, and grungy moving backgrounds and grungy text. My favorite part is the little blue button that randomizes the effects. The effects do have a TON of sliders so it's not always clear on what needs to be adjusted to get the effect needed, and that little blue button is just what I need to get started. The plug-in is very fast for previews and renders and is CHEAP at just $99. Also, one license works in multiple hosts on a single computer (AE, FCP, PPRO, Combustion).

Cost: $99 (Buy | Try)

Samples:

8 Boris Continuum Motion Key

Description: Remove an object from your shot quickly without much work.

Why I like it: I showed Motion Key as part of BCC5 at NAB08 and found that this plug-in absolutely blew people away. If you've ever had to rotoscope something out of a clip of video, you know how tedious and un-fun it can be. Motion Key takes all the work out of it by using Optical Flow technology. It's now sold by it self as a single unit and is also included with Boris Continuum Complete 6.

Cost: (Buy | Try)

Sample:

9 The Foundry Keylight

Description: Academy Award winning keyer. It is simple to use and is particularly good at tackling reflections, semi-transparent areas and hair.

Why I like it: I know, two keyers on the list! What gives? You know I recently worked on a book, right? I have used a lot of keying tools in the past 2 years! Keylight is a very powerful keyer and when others can't do the job, Keylight can usually handle it. It is easy to use, fast and has built-in spill suppression. Keylight gives several ways to view the matte/key, and it's included with After Effects, so most of you already own Keylight. Also, Toolfarm also put out some great training for Keylight called Professional Keying with Keylight, that I highly recommend picking up.

Cost: $420 node-locked, $630 floating (Buy Node-Locked, Buy Floating | Try)

Samples: I thought I'd just put the trailer for the Keylight training up. It will give you a good idea about what the plug-in does.

10 Red Giant Magic Bullet Looks

Description: Define the style of your video or film, regardless of on-set conditions, with powerful imaging tools.

Why I like it: This is my favorite plug-in of the lot. It is extremely easy to use, as the interface was designed for artists, not engineers. It comes with a huge library of Looks that are fully customizable and savable. It's lightning fast because of GPU acceleration. It can make video with flat lighting look amazing and it's also great for matching your foreground and background when compositing greenscreen. I use this on pretty much everything, including photos.

Cost: $399 (Buy | Try) Quick Looks now available for $99 (presets only).

Samples: Here's one from our German friend at MyToolfarm.

And here's a promo for a greenscreen contest that I used Looks on the webcam shots to spice them up.

Late Entry: Boris Continuum Complete 6.0 3D Object Filters

Description: 5 new plug-ins in BCC6 that extrude text, paths and eps/Illustrator files.

Why I like it: Easy to use and very fast (hardware accelerated). It works with the native AE camera and lights and everything except the text type window is in the native AE Effect control window. There are loads of options and loads of presets. All bevels can be customized with paths and did I mention the real-time previews? This will certainly make the 2010 top 10 list (but who will I bump?!)

Cost: $995 (Buy | Try)

Samples:Here's the finished video shown at the Boris FX Booth at NAB09.

Here's a tutorial I put out a couple of weeks ago.

And here's a tutorial I did for Boris FX. I plan to do a few more tutorials on these fan-diddly-tastic plug-ins.

Honorable Mention: Noise Industries FxFactory Pro

Description: Revolutionary VFX package with over 300 hardware accelerated plug-ins

Why I like it: I really was going for no big packages but just individual plug-ins in this list however, this one is a little different. Why is it different? With FxFactory, you can create your own FxPlug effects for Final Cut Studio without writing any code. Okay, I know this is for FCP and not AE, but, it's still an excellent package of plugins that are VERY fast and have unlimited expandability (you can download more plug-ins at the FxMarket).

Cost: (Buy | Try)

Samples: Here's the promo that just came out.

4/16/2009 Permalink 1 Comments share on linkedin
So you just bought a fast new computer and dread the process of having to transfer your licenses to your new computer. It can be a hassle, but here is a guide for a few products you may own, to help things go a bit more smoothly. If you have questions, please post a comment below.

Adobe:

If you want to uninstall your product and reinstall it on a different computer, then you must first deactivate it. In the program, click Help > Deactivate, and then follow the instructions in the wizard to deactivate the program. If you have installed a suite product, you can deactivate the entire suite by deactivating any one of the point products included in that suite.

Automatic Duck:
  1. After installing again on the new system, you will get a new Product ID to use for a new Activation Key. DO NOT try to activate the old Product ID on the new system.
  2. Reset your serial number on the registration server so that you will be permitted to activate again. Please reset your serial number at this web page.
  3. Register using your email address that you used to activate and you'll be able to log in and reset your serial number.
  4. Quit After Effects, trash your plug-in's key file, click here to find it. Now you'll need to go through the activation process again.

BorisFX:

Requires a license transfer. Send license transfer request to us with your new Unique Product ID to obtain a new permanent code. Follow your original install instructions to obtain your Unique ID.

Digieffects:

Just reinstall on the new machine. Your serial number will work on either Mac or Windows, and does not require uninstalling your previous system's version.

The Foundry:

To obtain a new license, first fill out the license transfer form. You cannot transfer any of The Foundry products to a different host system.

GenArts Sapphire:

  1. First uninstall the plugin: On Windows: go to Start->Control Panel->Add or Remove Programs. Find 'GenArts Sapphire Plug-ins' in the list, and press the Change/Remove button. On Mac: go to the /Applications/GenArtsSapphireAE folder and double click on Uninstall Sapphire.
  2. During the uninstall, select the option to register that uninstall via the web. As long as the uninstall is successfully registered, you should then be able to install your serial number on the new machine. The license is cross-platform so you can transfer a serial number between Windows and Mac systems in this way.

GridIron:

Requires a license deactivation. Send your old serial number and the MAC Address of the new machine to us.

Imagineer Systems:

Requires a license transfer. Send a license transfer request to us to obtain a new license.

Noise Industries FxFactory Pro:

First uninstall from the old machine by launching the FxFactory application and choose the "Uninstall FxFactory..." command under the Actions menu: Then install as normal on the new machine.

If you uninstall FxFactory, it will uninstall everything, including all the FxPacks.

Furthermore you can also deactivate and remove individual FxPacks. This can be done by launching the FxFactory application.
  1. To turn FxPacks on/off simply click the checkbox to the left of each FxPack in the FxFactory Application interface.
  2. To completely remove an FxPack simply drag it out of the FxFactory application and into the trash.
