RED One and Magic Bullet Looks
Oliver Peters has a really good blog post on RED One and Magic Bullet Looks.Aside from its power, Looks relies on a well-designed custom user interface to edit and apply effects. Maschwitz's breakthrough was to redesign the Looks GUI based on common tools that are part of steps in the production and post chain. Effects can be applied to these stages and in this order: Subject, Matte, Lens, Camera and Post. Some effects, like Fill Light can only be applied to a single stage, like Subject. Others, such as Film-like Curves, may be applied to difference stages in the chain, plus can be applied to more than one stage within the same effect chain. A single "look" is made up of a series of filters chained in sequence. For example, the Mexicali preset look consists of Curves + Exposure + Lift/Gain/Gamma + Curves + Auto Shoulder.
I highly recommend downloading a free trial of Magic Bullet Looks.
Looks is the unofficial #1 plug-in on my Top 10 Must-Have Plug-ins for Adobe After Effects list. Do you think Looks or another plug-in is the most flexible and user-friendly plug-in out there? Let us know! We're running a Plug-ins Survey and if you fill it out, you will be entered to win a Drobo! Click Here to take survey.

Avid Delivers Native RED Support
TEWKSBURY, Mass., March 5, 2009 - Avid Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: AVID) today announced that Avid® DS now offers native support for the RED R3D file format, delivering customers increased efficiencies in the editorial and finishing process of RED-originated projects.
With native support for RED, Avid customers will benefit from:
- A speedier ingest of RED footage;
- The ability to apply RLX color intent data to the footage in the Avid system; and
- Capabilities to preset project and sequence settings for RED projects at 2k, 3k, and 4k resolutions.
In addition to handling native R3D footage, Avid DS customers will now be able to create HD RGB 4:4:4 proxies from high-resolution RED source material, which will provide real-time program monitoring and result in faster system response time - enabling artists to stay focused on the creative editorial aspects of a project.
Avid will also offer native RED support for the offline editing process via MetaFuze®, a tool that automates the conversion of formats such as RED and DPX to Avid DNxHD® media for HD offline workflows in Avid Media Composer® and HD finishing in Symphony systems. As a result, customers are able to take advantage of the Avid Advanced Conform workflow for RED and seamlessly move their projects from offline to online.
"We are very excited about the new Avid and RED integration", said Ted Schilowitz of RED Digital Cinema. "The ability to use the MetaFuze tool to turn RED files into true native MXF files at the various offline and online resolutions is a very powerful step that will enable a more streamlined workflow for the many RED projects around the world that are cutting on Avid. The DS integration of RED files for online color grading and finishing is another important development on making offline to online very cost-effective. Fewer workflow steps and tape layoffs for finishing with RED files is the most effective and efficient way to deliver projects."
Kirk Arnold, EVP and GM of Customer Operations at Avid said, "We strive to make the technology seamless for customers to allow them to keep focused on unleashing the creative talents that continue to entertain millions. We also understand that our customers want freedom and flexibility to work with whichever format they choose, and our effort to offer native RED support is the latest example of how we continue to evolve our solutions and meet customers' needs."
Native support for R3D files is available in Avid DS. version 10.1.1. For customers looking to upgrade, visit the Avid download center.

Adobe Releases Premiere Pro CS4 v.4.0.1
Today, Adobe Systems Incorporated introduced Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 version 4.0.1 software, a major update to the leading start-to-finish professional video production solution. A pivotal component of Adobe Creative Suite 4 Production Premium, Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 version 4.0.1 leads the way in delivering open, flexible post-production workflows by providing virtually seamless project exchange with Final Cut Pro, Digidesign Pro Tools, and Avid workflows. Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 version 4.0.1 enables users to import Final Cut Pro projects via XML interchange, export to Open Media Framework (OMF) format, and import and export projects in Advanced Authoring Format (AAF). Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 version 4.0.1 also offers significant performance and stability enhancements, including full support for 64-bit computing platforms to accelerate compute-intensive post-production tasks.Top new features in Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 version 4.0.1 include:
- More flexible, open workflows: Editors who are using Final Cut Pro, Digidesign Pro Tools, and Avid solutions can now more easily tap the high level of integration and unique features offered in Adobe Creative Suite 4 Production Premium. Final Cut Pro users can transfer projects directly to Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 version 4.0.1 without conversions or re-rendering, preserving commonly used effects and transitions. Once files are in Adobe Premiere Pro CS4, features such as Adobe Dynamic Link provide tighter-than-ever integration when moving assets among Adobe After Effects CS4, Adobe Premiere Pro CS4, and Soundbooth CS4, saving invaluable time that would otherwise be spent in intermediate rendering. To help users manage footage, Speech Search in Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 turns spoken dialog into text-based metadata that makes video searchable. Project output can be delivered virtually anywhere, including exporting through Adobe Encore CS4 to Blu-ray, DVD, and the Web. Customers can also streamline audio editing by exporting audio in OMF for interchange with audio workstations, and then importing the final mix back into Adobe Premiere Pro CS4. Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 version 4.0.1 also includes enhanced AAF project interchange for improved integration with high-end workflows and tools.
- Native RED R3D support: Both Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 version 4.0.1 and Adobe After Effects CS4 version 9.0.1 provide a true file-based workflow for RED R3D files, without transcoding or rewrapping, via RED’s beta plug-in available at www.red.com/support . Native handling of RED R3D augments Adobe’s existing support of Sony XDCAM EX, Panasonic P2, and AVCHD tapeless formats, providing users with software-only HD workflows from capture to output. In addition to downloading the RED plug-in, customer must update their software to Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 version 4.0.1 and Adobe After Effects CS4 version 9.0.1, accessible for free throughout the Adobe update manager in the Help menu of the applications. To learn more about RED workflows with Adobe video solutions go to: www.adobe.com/products/premiere/pdfs/red_adobe_cs4_beta.pdf
- Faster performance and responsiveness, with full support for 64-bit computing platforms to accelerate compute-intensive post-production tasks. Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 version 4.0.1 is architected to take advantage of the additional memory available in 64-bit systems. In addition, version 4.0.1 includes numerous performance enhancements in all areas of the workflow.

Adobe fires another shot across Apple’s bow
Scott Simmons has an article up at Studio Daily, Adobe fires another shot across Apple's bow, about Premiere Pro's latest update to version 4.0.1. It's a HUGE update for just a single point, as Scott says, it should be Premiere Pro 4.1. I was taking with David Helmly from Adobe a couple of weeks ago and he was telling me about the new features in PPRO 4.0.1 and I agree, its a huge update. What are the biggest new features?
- Adobe's RED support.
- The ability to import a Final Cut Pro XML
- Export audio to OMF
