Stu Maschwitz has mocked up a quick concept about running Magic Bullet Looks on the new Apple iPad on his ProLost blog. The gestural interface would be perfect for working with the color wheels in Colorista. Hmmm.... The future is bright! Check out his blog.
I actually recorded this a few days before Halloween and hadn't gotten around to finishing it so the freshness has worn off a bit. Please enjoy it anyway!

Newest Version of mocha products Streamline Corner-Pinning Data Export Directly to Red Giant Warp
GUILDFORD, UK (November 3, 2009) - Imagineer Systems (www.imagineersystems.com) today announced new software point releases of its popular planar tracking and rotoscoping software mocha and mocha for After Effects v2. Most notably with this new release, mocha v1.6 and mocha for After Effects v2 now support tracking data export directly to the Red Giant Warp After Effects plug-in.
mocha for After Effects v2 is a stand alone 2D tracking tool for the After Effects community based on Imagineer Systems' unique 2.5D Planar Tracking technology. mocha for After Effects helps solve problematic shots that traditionally challenge point based trackers, such as footage with objects moving out of frame, lack of detail, motion blur and heavy grain. This helps the artist to generate solid tracks, giving position, scale, rotation, shear and perspective matched tracks and exporting the data to After Effects in less time.
"Many of our users have been requesting a simpler workflow between Red Giant Warp's powerful dual-corner pinning tool and mocha for After Effects' superior planar tracking system," said Sean Safreed, direct of product management for Red Giant Software. "Thanks to Imagineer's work, Warp has direct access to the mocha output. We're excited that users can now use both together seamlessly."
"In the last year, After Effects artists have become reliant on mocha's planar tracker to solve the most challenging shots but are always looking for ways to improve their compositing workflow," added Ross Shain, chief marketing officer for Imagineer Systems. "Red Giant's Warp offers high quality corner pin rendering and the ability to use mocha's data with a simple dual pin interface. This solves some of the existing complexity that can arise when using AE for screen replacements. Partnering with developers like Red Giant to ensure our tools are working effectively and efficiently together ultimately yields the kind of value our customers are looking for."
Imagineer Systems Ltd innovates and markets next-generation visual effects solutions for film, video and broadcast post production markets. Imagineer Systems has made its mark on such marquis Hollywood blockbuster productions as Casino Royale, Pirates of the Caribbean and Harry Potter. Imagineer's desktop product line consists of monet - placement station, mokey - removal station, motor - roto station, mocha - tracking station, mocha for After Effects - planar tracker for Adobe After Effects, and mocha shape for After Effects - the new rotoscoping shape import plug in for After Effects users, mocha for Final Cut - planar tracking for Final Cut Pro users, and mocha shape for Final Cut - the new rotoscoping shape import plug in for Final Cut Pro. Imagineer Systems was founded in 2000 and its headquarters is located in Guildford, United Kingdom. For more information visit www.imagineersystems.com.

San Francisco, CA, July 13, 2009 - Red Giant Software, publisher of the popular Magic Bullet and Trapcode plug-ins, today announced that it has shipped Trapcode Particular 2. Trapcode Particular-award-winning software commonly used by visual effects and motion graphics artists on feature films and TV commercials - generates quick-rendering 3D particles with full camera integration and natural behavior. Many editing programs offer basic particle-generation features. Trapcode Particular, a patent-pending After Effects plug-in, goes way, way beyond the basics of particle generation.
In Angels & Demons, one of the highest-grossing movies of 2009 with more than $470 million in worldwide box office to date, CIS Vancouver used Trapcode Particular to create natural media effects such as sparks and burning embers.
"We used Trapcode Particular on Angels & Demons to help create realistic 3D embers and falling ash. We were amazed at how quickly Particular could set up and render a shot, and then allow us to make changes almost in real time. The embers have to have a specific look, and also animate as they fall. The combination of custom sprites and 3D turbulence fields allowed us to create realistic acting particles that cut seamlessly with practically shot elements. Particular was able to handle the large number of embers easily and quickly, even showing live depth of field as we worked," said Mark Breakspear, Visual Effects Supervisor at CIS Vancouver.
About Angels & Demons
The team behind the global phenomenon The Da Vinci Code returned for the making of Angels & Demons, based upon the bestselling novel by Dan Brown. Tom Hanks reprises his role as Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon, who once again finds that forces with ancient roots are willing to stop at nothing, even murder, to advance their goals. Ron Howard directs the film, which is produced by Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, and John Calley. The screenplay is by David Koepp and Akiva Goldsman.
About Trapcode Particular
Users looking for fast renders, bouncing particles, 3D camera integration, particles that emit particles, custom shapes, air resistance, gravity and turbulence controls, and depth of field need to look no further! Trapcode Particular can also produce star fields, asteroid belts, or meteor showers. With Particular 2, users no longer need their favorite 3D modeling/animation program to create virtual 3D textures or adjust lighting as text or objects tumble in 3D space. Particular 2 lets you do it all right inside After Effects.
In this video hosted by Studio Daily, Red Giant's Sean Safreed shows you how to create a custom cartoon style and compares ToonIt's feature set to the bundled cartoon effect inside AE CS4.
If you don't have ToonIt and would like to try it out, download a free trial here. If you'd like to buy ToonIt, save 5% with Toolfarm's everyday discount!
San Francisco, CA, June 23, 2009 - Red Giant Software is proud to announce that Stu Maschwitz is now the new Creative Director for Magic Bullet products. Stu Maschwitz is the original creator of the Magic Bullet Suite of plug-ins.
"In my directing work, on projects big and small, I'm always finding ways that the filmmaking process can be made more efficient, more fun, and more accessible to all budget levels. Over the years I've enjoyed a great relationship with Red Giant Software, who have taken these ideas and turned them into tools that the world can enjoy. It's great to make that relationship official," said Stu Maschwitz.
"The Magic Bullet vision is to create software that gives any production, regardless of budget, the look of a high-end feature film. We are immensely pleased that Stu is dedicating his time and vision to enhance and grow the Magic Bullet tools in 2009 and beyond. He has already begun to work on new Magic Bullet products, and you will see many new and updated tools coming later this year," said Sean Safreed, Co-Founder and Director of Products at Red Giant Software.
About Magic Bullet In 2000, Stu Maschwitz created the Magic Bullet Suite, a set of After Effects plug-ins that allowed users to create film-like output from any video source. Prior to 2007, The Orphanage owned the intellectual property behind Magic Bullet, but the product was published and managed by Red Giant Software. Red Giant Software purchased Magic Bullet from The Orphanage in late 2006. Post-acquisition, Red Giant Software developed the Magic Bullet Colorista and Magic Bullet Looks color tools, which are among the most widely used color correction and enhancements tools on the market. Hundreds of thousands of users rely on Magic Bullet tools to enhance their productions. Consumers turn to Magic Bullet to add style to their home movies and feature film artists add a sense of place, as seen in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.
About Stu Maschwitz Stu Maschwitz is a director, author, and champion of what has become known as the "DV Rebel" school of filmmaking, which suggests that high production value can be achieved at any budget level. Hailed by Shoot Magazine as one of the "Ten Commercial Directors To Watch," Maschwitz quickly gained a reputation for tackling extraordinarily complex visual challenges while injecting his signature kinetic style. An innovator in filmmaking technology, Maschwitz is the creator of the revolutionary Magic Bullet software-which gives inexpensive digital video the lush look of film.
About Red Giant SoftwareRed Giant Software offers a vast range of visual effects plug-ins, with over 30 packages designed for Adobe After Effects, Premiere Pro, Apple Final Cut Pro, Motion, and Avid. The product line features industry-leading effects for designing realistic fire, rain, and water; adding popular looks; and creating perfect keys. Red Giant effects have enhanced feature films such as Angels & Demons, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Mummy 3, and Grindhouse, and added sparkle to cable and broadcast content from NBC Universal, Food Network, ESPN, Disney, CNN, Comedy Central, MTV, and TNT.

We are currently having a sale on the Red Giant Pro Keying Bundle, which includes Primatte Keyer Pro and Key Correct Pro. It's an incredible deal at 50% off because they are such great tools. Primatte Keyer is designed for designers not programmers so it is very visual. There are big buttons to click and you can drag around your mouse to select the colors you want to key out and to adjust your matte, as opposed to tweaking sliders. Key Correct includes tools like Smooth Screen, which evens out your greenscreen, making your foreground easier to key, without worsening spill. Great tools! The sale is over on June 15, next Monday.
If you missed the podcast I did for Red Giant TV last month about Primatte Keyer and Key Correct Pro, check it out here. It's not just another "here's how to use the tools" type of video, but I get deep into keying technique with tips to optimize your keying potential.
Red Giant Pro Keying Suite Half Off, Includes Key Correct Pro and Primatte Keyer
Frizzy hair? Semi-transparent glass? This bundle of Primatte Keyer Pro 4.0 and Key Correct Pro lets you tackle the toughest keying challenges with confidence and in record time. Begin by using Key Correct Pro's pre-key tools to prep your footage for keying in the powerful Primatte Keyer, then touch up your mattes in Key Correct Pro for pixel-perfect results within After Effects. Includes Key Correct Pro, and Primatte Keyer Pro.
Aside from its power, Looks relies on a well-designed custom user interface to edit and apply effects. Maschwitz's breakthrough was to redesign the Looks GUI based on common tools that are part of steps in the production and post chain. Effects can be applied to these stages and in this order: Subject, Matte, Lens, Camera and Post. Some effects, like Fill Light can only be applied to a single stage, like Subject. Others, such as Film-like Curves, may be applied to difference stages in the chain, plus can be applied to more than one stage within the same effect chain. A single "look" is made up of a series of filters chained in sequence. For example, the Mexicali preset look consists of Curves + Exposure + Lift/Gain/Gamma + Curves + Auto Shoulder.
Looks is the unofficial #1 plug-in on my Top 10 Must-Have Plug-ins for Adobe After Effects list. Do you think Looks or another plug-in is the most flexible and user-friendly plug-in out there? Let us know! We're running a Plug-ins Survey and if you fill it out, you will be entered to win a Drobo! Click Here to take survey.
Buy Magic Bullet Looks here. Toolfarm has an everyday 5% discount on pretty much all of the software in our store, so buy it at Toolfarm, mmmmkay.

Are you going to NAB this year? Do you need a free pass to the show floor?
Yes Apple isn’t going to be there and neither is RED or Quantel … But Avid is, Adobe is, all of the other camera manufacturers are going to be there. Plus there’s a lot of other great small software developers that will be on the show floor so there’s going to be a lot to see. Plus the Final Cut Pro SuperMeet will be happening as well. You might can find a good deal on a flight if you try hard or fly Southwest and you can definitely find a good deal on a hotel. Get a pass to the show floor and get to Vegas. I looks like I’ll be there too and I am very excited. And I will not eat at any buffets this year.
To get your free pass that includes access to the exhibit floor and the opening keynote (a $150 value) go to http://nabshow.com/passport and enter this code: TP01.
If you're NAB alumni, I've also received the code DM01 for a free Alumni Exhibits passport.
I wrote an article last year or the year before called The NAB Survival Guide. I'll dig it up and repost it. I have a busy week planned once again, working between the Red Giant, Digieffects and Boris booths and even doing some book signings for my new book with Jeremy Hanke, Greenscreen Made Easy.
Eric Escobar created a nice tutorial that gives you some insight about Color Correction in Final Cut Pro. He uses Red Giant Magic Bullet Colorista. Eric says:
the one I did for FCP also includes a basic explanation of controlling color using Colorista, although the ideas apply to FCP's 3 Way Color Corrector and pretty much all primary color correction tools out there on the desktop.

Red Giant Software: Episode 06: Controling Time with Sound By Aharon Rabinowitz came out a few days ago.

Re-Branding of Digital Anarchy Video Plug-Ins Now Complete
San Francisco, CA, January 13, 2009 - Red Giant Software, with popular products including Magic Bullet Suite, Knoll Light Factory and Trapcode Suite, today introduced Datamator, a plug-in set for creating data-driven animations for news programs and corporate videos. Red Giant Datamator (formerly Digital Anarchy Data Animator) turns charts and graphs into compelling animated masterpieces in After Effects. Datamator includes a set of eight plug-ins that make it easier for videographers to create graphs and charts directly in After Effects instead of using PowerPoint or re-creating graphics from scratch.
"We have worked hard to make Datamator a solid product that delivers fast 3D data charting in After Effects," said Sean Safreed, Co-Founder and Director of Product Management at Red Giant Software. "With this release, we have completed the re-launch of the full line of the former Digital Anarchy video plug-ins for broadcast designers. We are committed to updating and enhancing these tools with user-driven features."
Highlights
True 3D capabilities Most charting software is limited to fake 3D, but with Datamator, users have control over built-in cameras, lighting and rotation, including true After Effects Comp camera support for easier animation.
Complete Control Once the data is inside Datamator, users can easily customize every aspect of their charts and graphs. It is easy to adjust colors, typefaces, grids, legends and labels, and create alpha channels, or choose from popular presets. Datamator even has a way to check for updated data in the original file.
Updated Speed and Hosts Version 1.5 delivers a new render engine that is more than 2x times faster than the previous version. Users with four or eight core machines will see even greater speed increases. This version is specifically updated for Adobe After Effects CS4.
Combine with other Red Giant plug-ins such as Radium Glow for truly eye-popping imagery
Pricing and Availability
Red Giant Datamator supports After Effects 7.0-CS4 on Mac OS X including Intel Mac and Windows (XP and Vista). The product is available now for $99.

San Francisco, CA, November 10, 2008 - Red Giant Software, publisher of the popular Magic Bullet, Knoll Light Factory and Trapcode products, today introduced Red Giant Warp. Adding a perfect shadow, a realistic reflection or working with distorted video can be tough. Red Giant Warp makes it easy to generate these effects quickly.
The three powerful plug-ins in the Warp toolset give users ultimate control over shadows, reflections and corner point warps. The Shadow tool renders realistic shadows for text or subjects shot on greenscreen, while the Reflection tool creates perfect mirror-like reflections. The advanced Corner Pin tool includes features for working with warped images, importing tracking data from Mocha for After Effects, and adding secondary transforms and motion blur-everything you need to heighten realism in any scene. Priced at $199, Warp is available for purchase from http://toolfarm.stores.yahoo.net/redgiantwarp10.html.
The capabilities of Red Giant Warp go far beyond those of its application hosts. Designed with input from real-world testers, Warp includes features such as dual-warp corner pinning with full motion blur support, 3D shadows with user-definable bending effects, and powerful reflection compositing that would be complex and time-consuming to generate by hand. With Warp, users can generate these realistic effects quickly and without complex compositing tricks.
Highlights
Pin with Precision
It's tough to take video from a warped source, such as a billboard shot in perspective, and add it to another video. But the dual warping tools in Warp's Corner Pin plug-in make it easy to take any video source, warped or not, and put it into a new place with proper perspective. With advanced offset controls and direct Mocha for After Effects integration, manipulating corner pins with tracking data couldn't be easier.
Play on the Dark Side
Adding depth is easy with the Shadow tool. Three point controls let users set the shadow perspective, and fade controls to create realistic falloff. A unique bend control can warp the shadow to create the illusion of shadows falling on two planes in 3D space.
Reflect your World
Adding a simple reflection is easy in most tools, but making it look real can be a challenge. Reflection provides an easy-to-use setup control for defining a mirror reflection for any source video or image. Extensive controls let you add fade-out or blur to make your reflection look sharp or diffuse.

Warp works in Adobe After Effects CS4, CS3, 7; Adobe Premiere Pro CS4, CS3 (Windows only); Apple Final Cut Pro 6, 5.1.4; Apple Motion 3.02; Avid Xpress Pro/Media Composer 5.6, 5.7 / 2.6, 2.7

After Effects and Premiere Pro CS4 Compatibility Chart
From Red Giant: "We have been testing our products against After Effects and Premiere Pro CS4. For After Effects, some products are ready to go as is, while a few products will require a minor update for installer compatibility. Most versions of our software that are compatible with Premiere Pro will need an update due to changes in Premiere Pro." For full details, view the chart.
PlaneSpace eliminates the tedious task of managing the individual layers in multi-layer effects. The Creator tools automatically create layers that form cubic, cylindrical, and spheroid shapes or complex matrices, while the six Distribute tools arrange 3D layers throughout 3D space into the shape of your choice without requiring keyframes or complicated math.
No Keyframes Necessary Unlike keyframe assistants such as The Wiggler, PlaneSpace does not need keyframes to be present in a layer. In fact, these tools weren't designed to set keyframes at all, but are designed to arrange layers in 3D space. Of course, you can still set keyframes to animate the position or orientation of your layers, to make truly sophisticated objects in 3D.
Unlimited Number of Layers The number of layers that PlaneSpace can manipulate is limited only by your computer’s processing power. PlaneSpace can even duplicate and distribute large groups of layers. 400 layers? No problem – PlaneSpace makes it possible, and easy.
Powerful Controls No matter what shape you choose for your layers, you customize settings for size, distribution, distance (how far apart the layers will be), and incremental distance. Set repeat values to save RAM by duplicating 10 layers instead of 100 individual ones.
Red Giant Effects Bundle Also Includes Magic Bullet Looks and Instant HD
San Francisco, CA, October 14, 2008 - Red Giant Software, with popular products Magic Bullet, Knoll Light Factory and Trapcode, today announced that Panasonic expanded its long standing bundle with Red Giant Software to include ToonIt with its powerful AG-DVX100B camcorder purchased in the United States. Customers that purchase the AG-DVX100B camcorder between October 1, 2008 and December 31, 2008 will receive a complimentary copy of the Red Giant Effects Bundle, which includes ToonIt, Magic Bullet Looks, and Magic Bullet Instant HD. Panasonic began bundling Red Giant Software products with the AG-DVX100 line of camcorders in the summer of 2004.
About ToonIt
Red Giant ToonIt uses unique algorithms developed by Toonamation to transform images into beautiful cartoon shading and lines. Users can give video footage that sought-after cartoon look easily and quickly. The four plug-ins free users from time-consuming techniques like rotoscoping and hand painting, and give precise control over styles, shading and outlines. Now it is easy to quickly convert video into a stylized animation with great default settings.
About Magic Bullet Looks
Desert sunrise, Arctic tundra, nighttime urban streets: the look of footage defines the mood. With Magic Bullet Looks, users can define the style of their video or film, regardless of on-set conditions, with powerful imaging tools. Hundreds of presets are available to help set the mood for everything from a wedding to the next Sundance original. Magic Bullet Looks also includes the standalone Magic Bullet LooksBuilder, for pre-visualizing looks on set or anywhere. Portable presets load into any editing hosts, so the same Looks you create on set are the ones you finish with in the editorial suite: no need for an expensive finishing system.
About Magic Bullet Instant HD
Instant HD up-converts DV video into a variety of HD video formats. Users can choose from a list of preset resolutions to easily integrate DV video into a High Definition production. When scaling from standard definition (SD) to high definition (HD), Instant HD's algorithms generate the missing pixels with integrated sharpening and anti-aliasing for sharp, clear results inside your favorite video application.
About the AG-DVX100B
The AG-DVX100B debuts as the industry's first DV camera-recorder to allow camera-to-camera time-code synchro and user-settable file transfer. This allows the AG-DVX100B to be used for simultaneous multi-camera recording techniques often used in video production. In addition to superior image quality, high sensitivity, 24P/30P Cinema mode and manual operation, it has the specifications needed for full-fledged professional video production. The photorealistic water simulation plug-in used in feature films
Used in Miramax's movie, "The Aviator," Psunami generates precise 3D geometry of an ocean surface, then produces ultra-realistic ray-traced output that looks like real water, from flat pools to raging high seas. Choose from hundreds of editable controls, and even place your camera underwater for the ultimate immersive effect. Psunami has been used in many feature films, television productions and commercials. Psunami works in After Effects, Final Cut Pro and Motion.
Powerful finishing tools for every editor in one package.
Magic Bullet Suite 2008 is a completely revamped product. Magic Bullet Suite now supports After Effects, Final Cut Pro, Motion, Premiere Pro, and Avid. The full suite of tools includes Magic Bullet Looks (including Misfire), Magic Bullet Frames, Magic Bullet Colorista, Magic Bullet Steady, and Instant HD for high-quality up-conversion.
John Dickinson has just uploaded a new training video for Red Giant Software Radium Glow. The video is 17 minutes(35MB Quicktime) and John explains the basic workflow for the plug-in.
This was the first time I'd used the effect and have been pretty impressed with the results; you have a lot of control over exactly how and where the glow appears on your footage. Definitely worth a look.
The tutorial shows the Adobe After Effects version but it the plug-in also works in Adobe Premiere Pro, Apple Final Cut Pro, Motion and Avid AVX2 systems. One license, all host apps on one computer!
San Francisco, CA, August 11, 2008 - Red Giant Software, with popular products Magic Bullet, Knoll Light Factory and Trapcode, today launched Magic Bullet Steady, a new tool to remove camera shake, jitter, and noise. Magic Bullet Steady is a plug-in for users of Final Cut Pro 6 and After Effects CS3 (Mac and Windows). The stabilizer function removes unwanted camera movement which can be distracting and disturbing to viewers.
Magic Bullet Steady offers powerful algorithms which analyze the video, detect motion, and apply one of four filtering modes. The result is a smooth, stabilized motion that preserves camera pans and other desired movements while eliminating jarring shake. A second filter removes noise and other low-light artifacts. Priced at $199, Magic Bullet Steady is available for purchase from Toolfarm and Red Giant.
Highlights
Stabilization Camera movement and tough shooting conditions can cause distracting, jerky motion; and film sprocket damage on old footage can cause gate jitter and weave. The Stabilizer feature uses a software-based 2D translation to repair this type of footage in near real-time.
Noise Reduction Too often, noise reduction means everything gets very blurry. Not so with Magic Bullet Steady. It uses spatial and temporal data to work out true image values, and customizable settings give you control over block size. Adjust the optional detail protection feature to find the right results for your desired output.
Blistering Speed Compared to the built-in stabilization features in After Effects or Final Cut Pro, Magic Bullet Steady yields great results in record time.
Faster than built-in solutions available in the host applications
Pricing and Availability
Magic Bullet Steady is available now for $199 USD and supports After Effects CS3 on Windows XP/Vista and Mac OS X. The software also runs in Final Cut Pro on Mac OS X.

Sale of Video Products Allows Company to Fully Concentrate on Photoshop and Professional Photography Markets.
San Francisco, CA - August 4, 2008 - Digital Anarchy, known for its high quality creative software in both the broadcast and Photoshop markets, has announced today the sale of their full video product line to Red Giant Software. For seven years, Digital Anarchy has made a name for itself by delivering innovative software for visual effects, video editing and 2D animation in the film and television industry. Effective Monday, August 4th, the company will transfer sales and support of 12 plug-in products for host applications that include Adobe After Effects, Apple Final Cut Pro, Avid systems and Autodesk systems.
This asset sale will allow Digital Anarchy to focus on their other core market, Photoshop plug-ins for photographers and digital artists. Since 2004, the company has released tools that help professional and hobbyist photographers to uniquely create a fully digital portrait studio. The company has recently focused on software that provides custom graphic effects, and plans to release new innovative products by the beginning of Q4 2008. Digital Anarchy is also considering development for related host applications like Adobe Lightroom and Apple Aperture.
Jim Tierney, president of Digital Anarchy, said, "We have been a leader in the After Effects and related markets since 2001, but have decided to focus on the Photoshop and digital photography markets. We’re excited about some of the opportunities there and are looking closer at current customer needs. Developing more creative and productive technology to service the wide variety of Photoshop artists and digital photographers is an important part of our strategy moving forward. In making this decision, it was important that we find a company who would take excellent care of our current film/video customers, and we think Red Giant Software is that company."
Photoshop Products Kept; Video Products Sold.
The sale of its video products will not affect Digital Anarchy’s Photoshop customers. Digital Anarchy has retained its full Photoshop product line and will continue to provide the quality software and support that the company is known for. These Photoshop products are: Primate Chromakey, Backdrop Designer, Knoll Light Factory, and Texture Anarchy. All sales and support questions for Photoshop products should be directed towards Digital Anarchy at www.digitalanarchy.com.
Digital Anarchy has sold the following video products: 3D Assistants, Data Animator, Anarchy Toolbox, Geomancy, Psunami Water, Text Anarchy, ToonIt!, Microcosm, Color Theory, PlasmaFX, Chaos Stock and Knoll Spark Pack. Already a recognized video plug-in company, Red Giant Software has rebranded and reissued some of the Digital Anarchy products, and pulled others off the market temporarily for future re-release. All sales and support questions for video products should be directed towards Red Giant Software at www.redgiantsoftware.com. Existing Digital Anarchy customers will be fully supported for product upgrades, updates and changes.

Dennis Radeke reviews Red Giant Magic Bullet Looks at The Genesis Project.
Wow. Without diving into the toolsets and giving you a tutorial, let me say that the final output of the clips, the control that is possible, the speed at which the plugins perform, the performance inside of Adobe applications and the quality of the interface thoroughly impressed me.
The trial version of Red Giant Software Magic Bullet Instant HD Advanced... okay, that is a REALLY long name! This new plug-in for Adobe After Effects CS3 delivers the highest possible quality conversion for SD to HD and is well-suited to prepare analog source footage and DV video clips for inclusion in HD projects. Instant HD Advanced combines de-interlacing and de-noising; advanced pan and scan; and a super-resolution algorithm for providing actual resolution enhancement. The easy-to-use preset menu helps users choose the right HD and 2K output formats.
San Francisco, CA, July 2, 2008 - Red Giant Software, publisher of Magic Bullet, Knoll Light Factory and Trapcode products, today introduced Magic Bullet Instant HD Advanced (formerly named Instant HD Pro).
Highlights
Powerful Motion Analysis Instant HD Advanced uses sophisticated multi-vector motion analysis to derive accurate and sharp output frames from interlaced material. In addition, motion vectors drive the super-resolution and de-noising tools to maximize quality.
Resolution Squared Super-resolution is a technique for deriving and improving resolution from multiple frames of video. This method compares each pixel over successive frames, determining true edges in order to deliver sharper details and super-crisp results. Other scalers, including Instant HD and After Effects' built-in scaler, only process one frame at a time.
Multi-Core Support Instant HD Advanced's elaborate image processing would have meant minutes-per-frame render times just a short while ago, but thanks to multi-core optimizations on Intel-based platforms, this tool can render in just over a second per frame on the fastest machines. Now the highest quality conversion is possible on normal desktop machines - no expensive conversion hardware required.
Instant HD Advanced offers much higher quality than Instant HD or the scaler in After Effects thanks to the super resolution features in Advanced. The built-in deinterlacing and denoising controls greatly improve the quality of any interlaced material. Users that need faster scaling get the Instant HD plug-in for After Effects and other hosts as part of Instant HD Advanced package.

Red Giant Software, publisher of Knoll Light Factory and Trapcode, today added a new motion graphics tool to its growing line of professional digital video products. Red Giant Radium Glow is used to add optical glows and glitter to projects easily.
Unlike most glow filters that just blur the source video, Radium Glow provides pinpoint control over the glow, with editable shapes that can generate precise outlines or create glimmering points. The advanced edge controls, built-in masking, and output controls in Radium Glow let you mimic real light behavior. The three plug-ins can be used to add neon-shaped glows to text, or be combined with Trapcode Particular or other plug-ins to create dazzling sparkle and shimmer effects. Radium Glow supports numerous host applications for the low price of $99 USD.
Highlights:
Radium's intelligent area selection system makes the image glow where the source is the brightest. Bright parts of the subject glow larger, much like the result of widening a real camera's iris. This yields natural-looking halos and sparkle that cannot be replicated with other glow effects.
Radium Glow offers three different glow plug-ins. The set includes advanced masking and intensity controls, Glow Lite for simple controls to apply a glow quickly, and Glow Edge for applying glows only around the edges of objects. Four quality levels and full 32-bit floating-point rendering let users find the right tradeoff between speed and detail.
Unlike other glow plug-ins, Radium Glow uses shapes to generate a glow. Simple circles and star shapes are included, along with a library of 10 other shapes to enable sophisticated glow effects. Glow can even use any source image as a shape, giving users powerful creative control.
Pricing and Availability:
Red Giant Radium Glow is available now for $99 USD and supports After Effects, Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, Motion, and Avid AVX systems.

I was invited to the June Motion Picture Collective Meeting on plug-ins. It was held at Pratt Institute in New York City.
I got there about 45 minutes early and there was no one there! After about 30 minutes I started to worry that I came to the wrong place. As I was walking around I ran into Wes Plate of Automatic Duck. We chatted for a bit and then people started to roll in.
The pizza, sponsored by Sony, was incredible. Seriously, some of the best I've ever had. I had some veggie concoction, but Michael Vitti, head of MoPic Collective told me they also had some Cajun Shrimp pizza, but they only ordered one pie. Sounds fantastic!
The meeting started with an introduction and then Frank Garfi and Marc Fratto talked about their film Zombies Anonymous. Two words: Gratuitous violence. Their talk was pretty interesting though. They've taken the zombie story and flipped it around, making it a statement about how Arabs were treated after 9-11.
After that, Juan Martinez and Andrew Shipsides talked about Sony's EX Cameras.
Wes Plate from Automatic Duck came up and presented his products. Since there were so many editors in the audience, there was a lot of interest in his FCP products, especially.
My turn. Right before the show began, we were told we have an extra 15 minutes to fill. My presentation was planned to be exactly 20 minutes! Haha. I began asking the audience some questions about editing technique vs. software knowledge and then talked about Toolfarm. I presented Boris Continuum Complete and as usual, people are blown away by the Motion Key filter. I also had quite a bit of interest in the BCC Pan & Zoom filter which gives the Ken Burns style effect. I had a bit of time at the end, so I quickly showed Red Giant's Primatte Keyer, since keying seems to be a hot topic lately.
Next Michael Vitti showed Zaxwerks ProAnimator, then Jason Diamond showed Red Giant Magic Bullet Looks, which is always a crowd pleaser. I can't help but think that Zombies Anonymous could have benefited from a touch of Looks! Jason did a great job of presenting Looks and demo'd with some footage from a music video he had recently finished.
They also had an auction that night with tons of stuff.
Anyway, it was a good meeting and it was fun to get to New York City again. Thanks Michael Vitti for the invitation and the shirt. I love free shirts! It was great to see everyone in NYC, especially my old buddy Jim G. of the Toolfarm Expert Forum and Chris Tack, one of my former students who headed out to NYC after graduation. I also met quite a few new people from the NYC area. I saw Mario Lopez at a hot dog stand too! He's buff!
