It will be for a spot most likely shot on 24p HD that I will need to eventually convert to 1080i HD 59.94. What exact HD format or rate I don't know for sure yet. Along with this I will also have motion graphics as well. It will be an all tapeless workflow. Has anyone experience doing this, and if so what's the typical workflow?
For example do I do a rough cut of the footage on a 24p timeline, then use Apple Cinema Tools to convert it with 3:2 pull to 59.94? From then on stay in 59.94? Or can I just put the 24p footage in an HD 59.94 timeline?
Or while taxing on my hard drive... use Cinema tools or Compressor to convert all my raw clips to the foramt I need it in?
Finally, if there are any tips or things I need to look out for I would greatly appreciate any feedback. Anthing I need to look out for with audio syncing issues?

You can reply me perosnally at caforbes@cbs.com if you wish.

I also have the Adobe CS 5 & 6 at my disposal also.

Thanks for your help!

Charlie

Ideal Set up for D90 Video (no replies)

So here’s my problem. I normally work in FCP with clips from my Panasonic HVX P2 camera but I needed to use video from my D90 for a small project.

Not completely understanding the implications, I simply imported the clips and edited them together with text and graphics into an 11 min piece that looks and plays fine from the timeline.

But, when I followed my normal procedure for exporting the sequence (Export to: Quicktime > Current Settings) I got what at first appeared to be a perfectly fine .mov but when I play it through it gets to the 8 min point and then begins to fall totally out of synch with the audio and image skipping and repeating.

At first I had no idea of what the problem could be but then I figured that it had to do with having an incompatible sequence for the clips I was importing.

So, my question is, can anyone tell me the steps I can use to create a new project that’s ideal for the D90 clips I’m importing?

(Or, are there any other ideas for what this problem is?)

Thanks for your help with this,
Chris

Here are the relevant stats:

My system:

Model Name: Mac Pro
Model Identifier: MacPro1,1
Processor Name: Dual-Core Intel Xeon
Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
Number Of Processors: 2
Total Number Of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per processor): 4 MB
Memory: 4 GB

FCP 6.06

Sequence Settings:

Compressor: DVCPro HD 1080p30

Frame Size: 1280 x 1080
Vid Rate: 29.97 fps
Aud Rate: 48.0 Khz
32-bit Floating Point
Audio: 2 outputs

D90 Clip Settings
Compressor: Apple OpenDML JPEG

Frame Size: 1280 x 720
Vid Rate: 24 fps
Aud Rate: 11025Hz
16-bit Floating Point
Audio: mono

Final Cut Pro 6 (3 replies)

Hi, can you please explain the easiest simplest and best way of trying to achieve a specific special effect using Final cut Pro 6, the effect i am trying to create is to use a single cut & scene and then to proceed to loop and turn the action within this cut & scene forward and backwards using multiple key frames (if you view Bell & Spurling Sven, Sven, Sven 3:23 (2001) video and Michael Gray The weekend 3:33 (2004) Video this is the effect i am trying to emulate) to create an edit (range of frames) and then a sequence of frames (order of frames)

For example if a edit lasts 60 frames (02 seconds 10 frames) i would begin at frame No.01 and proceed to frame No.60, then reverse to frame No.10, then go forward to frame No.50, then reverse to frame No.20, then go forward to frame No.40, then reverse to frame No.30 and so on.

The next stage is to change the audio & visual speed of the edit (range of frames) or loop sequence (order of frames), to accelerate and decelerate the frames per second (normal speed is 25 frames per second) combining super slow motion, slow motion, normal and fast motion.

The next stage is picture rotation, which entails normal picture and then flopping the picture: 45 Z (or Y) rotation 90 Z (or Y) rotation 135 Z (or Y) rotation 180 Z (or Y) rotation 225 Z (or Y) rotation 270 Z (or Y) rotation 315 Z (or Y) rotation and 360 Z
(Or Y) rotation

I want to overlay various multi-effects & picture manipulations to finally create a seamless edit or continuation of action within the range & sequence (order of) & velocity of (constant & variable speeds) frames i want to avoid using quick inter-cuts or abrupt jump cuts if i can do so i want the cuts to be a smooth transition from one to the other

I want to create multiple edits & cuts within a given cut & scene by using multiple anchor points (Using Wire frame) to capture body language & movements, facial expressions, objects & props within the 100 per cent composition of the picture (master shot) and then using scale, crop, distort aspect ratio to capture this then you will be able to create multiple cuts’ from the original scenes’ that have been shot. (BCU Big close-up; Extreme Close-up ECU or XCU; XLS Extreme Long Shot; CU Close-up; MCU Medium close-up; Full Shot FS; Medium Shot MS; Medium Close-shot MCS; Medium Long shot MLS; Progressive angles from a master, to a medium, a close-up and extreme close-up or Regressive angles & shots;)

I trust you understand what i am trying to achieve as i have given you as much info as i can and i hope you can suggest what would be the best option for my project.

Frame rate conversion (1 reply)

Hi there, I'm (really really quickly) slapping a showreel together for a job opportunity that popped up near me. I mainly do after effects and maya stuff - the thing is anything that I've created from scratch is all PAL 25fps but other things where I've used things like a stock footage backplate for matchmoving or keying and applying effects or whatever - some of them are 25 fps but some are 29.97 and some are 30. At the time I didn't change the frame rate because it was just easier to work in the frame rate of the plate. But seeing as I have to put it on a PAL DVD, it'll all have to be 25fps.
What's the best way to just take all of the bits and bobs that I have, edit them all together nice and funky with some music in FCP - but have it all 25fps.

Do I have to convert all of the clips which are not 25fps before beginning editing? Or can I do it during the editing process? What's the best way in terms of convenience/quality. Outside of FCP, the best way I know of is Andrew Kramer's conversion method in After Effects found here [www.videocopilot.net]

I am guessing this is
a sequence settings problem, but cannot for the life of me, even after
tinkering for hours, figure out what the solution is.

Settings (from Browser)

PHOTOS
Frame size: 4272x2848
Vid rate 25 fps
Compressor: Photo - Jpeg.
Pixel Aspect: Square
Anamorphic is NOT ticked.

With these settings the photos are perfect in the viewer window.

SEQUENCE
Frame size: 768x576 (also tried 720x576, which gives a similar result)
Vid Rate: 25 fps
Compressor: Photo - JPEG.
Pixel Aspect: Square
Anamorphic is TICKED, as when I untick, the footage in the canvas
window squashes horizontally (though still retains the black bars on
either side)

With the above settings, the photos are in proportion, but include
black bars on either side.

And...

When trying to test export (in both compressor and FCP, to see if the
sequence would export minus the black bars, the result was squashed
horizontally, much like when i untick Anamorphic for a sequence.

The short film is due for a festival in a little over a week, and I
cannot start cutting it until all the still images are exported as
video and reimported for cutting. I have spent a little over a day
trying to figure it out but unfortunately am limited by my knowledge
and experience.

I apologise for the length of this post, and if any of information is
lacking, or incorrectly phrased.
Help needed. Final Cut Pro. Corrupt project file prevents FCP from opening (1 reply)

Hi All

Newbie here. I have searched the forum for similar topics and can't find any, so I apologise if one exists.

I have a friend running a Macbook Pro with an external LaCie hard drive on Firewire.

She has a very important project on the LaCie and no backup. She dropped the LaCie (twice) and since then, FCP will not run the project. I tried copying all the project files from the LaCie to another external drive and it stopped on a certain file (audio, I think) because the file was corrupt.

She has various FCP files scattered around the internal drive of the Macbook Pro, some fairly recent, so I don't know if any could be used to salvage the project. My friend is not computer literate at all, which is why there was no backups. I didn't know much about this project, so I couldn't warn her before it was too late.

We are in the UK and are looking for help to recover the lost project. We are willing to pay.

I don't know version numbers of FCP or specs of Macbook Pro, but if required I will find out anything needed.

TIA

Alex

My seq loses sync every time I make an audio edit (2 replies)

My seq loses sync every time I make an audio edit

I am working in a DVC HDPro50i codec and everything is fine until I make any kind of audio edit on a sync shot and it will go out of sync and most of the seq goes with it. I am editing in a pal project 48KHz 16 bit on an eight core mac with a blackmagic card and working from sata drives so it's not an issue of speed.

An edit assistant captured the DVC HD Pro footage via firewire on a single processor PPC G5 and reported it was coming in out of sync and most of the quicktimes are out of sync. Also FCP has somehow managed to reset about 80% of the clip time-codes to 00:00:00:00 which is my guess the source of the problem.

I have tried to fix the timecode in FCP to it's correct time but it just changes back to zero again. It's nothing to do with playback offset I've looked at that.
What should I do? Recapture? Don't really want unless I really have to, I have a lot of material.

I have been working on FCP 6.05 but have now upgraded to FCP 7 with no success. I have done the usual maintenance thrashing prefs etc and that resets it all back in sync until make another audio edit.

I would really appreciate some help with this as it's driving me mad.

Jake Martin

Final Cut Setup for Working with very different formats. (no replies)

Hi there.
I am struggling at the moment with what to do. Here is my predicament. I am currently shooting a documentary and will be using very different formats. One of the formats is HD using a Canon 5d Mark ii. The second is footage downloaded from youtube and converted to .mov using mpeg streamclip. The original footage of the you tube clips are very small, around 320 x 240. I have increased them in size to 720 x 480 using mpeg streamclip which seems okay and I can now edit them in final cut. I am wondering whether I should use my canon 5d mark ii preference settings in final cut for the project and import the .movs as 720x480.
Does anyone know of a better way to do this and of any potential problems. It is mainly for the web but I would like to make it for broadcast also. I have seen channel 4 use mobile phone footage with there own high quality footage on recent reports.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Many thanks,
Mark.
