Descriptions

Geomancy is a three plug-in set that creates and animates lines and shapes. While these common design elements are easy to create, they can be quite tedious to animate. We make this easy for you.

From rapid worm-like lines, to flowing electricity or water, to basic squares, stars, and X's, Geomancy is flexible and dynamic for creating patterns and texture, shapes and lines.

A particle system generates the shapes and randomness options abound. Parameters include thickness, length, location, path of motion, growth rate, and growth constraint.

The underlying grid system is used to control how these particles look and behave. Constrain them to the grid, or break away for a more organic, yet controlled, composition.

You have a lot of flexibility in the final look and animation of the lines and shapes. The sweetest aspect is that you don't need to set many if any keyframes. Generally our sample movies are created without keyframes needed to achieve their effects.

Avoiding keyframes can be a huge timesaver, particularly if you just want a random, animating element in the background. More often than not, such elements are easy to do, but tedious and time consuming. By using a particle system like Geomancy, you've eliminated the tedious part.

If you're familiar with our text animation set Digital Anarchy Text Anarchy, you already know about Geomancy's Randomness parameters. Most attributes that you can set have an associated 'Randomness' slider. The Randomness causes each particle to randomly sample from a range of values for the corresponding attribute.

Let's say a line's Opacity is set to 50. You set the Randomness to 50%. This means each line particle would get a value between 25 and 75 (50 + or - 50%... or 25, which is half of 50).

Its very easy to add in just_the_right_amount of randomness you want. Randomize a little bit or go all over the place. If you're looking to make your animation more organic and less structured, the Randomness slider provides invaluable assistance.

By using a particle system coupled to a grid system, the Geomancy plugins make it easy to create and animate the shapes and lines. The particle system generates the shapes. The grid system controls how they look and behave. This gives you a great deal of flexibility and power, without the complexity that usually comes with particle systems.

Usually particles will be constrained to the grid in one way or another. However, there are many ways to break them away from the grid and create a more organic, yet controlled, animation.

In all the plugins, you can set how closely lines or shapes adhere to the underlying grid. If you don't want the grid to be totally obvious, it's easy to get your particles to deviate. Using the 'Grid Adherence' controls, you can specify how far off the lines should be and what percentage of the lines should be off.

Support and Presets

  • Running Squares - Create some cool background graphics with GridSquares! This is a great tutorial for getting your head wrapped around the plugin's grid system. (Support files)
  • Blowing Smoke PDF - Use Hairlines to create some wispy smoke trails. Combine it with a couple standard AE filters, and you'll get some pretty realistic smoke! (Support files)
