Description

PHYX:filter is a collection of PPTs (PhyxProcessingTrees) designed to process imagery within Apple Shake. PHYX:filter is included in the 'PPTbundle'. The twelve plugins included with FILTER are: BlackMist, BleachBypass, GlowDark, GoldReflector, Halo, LightFixer, NightVision, ReverseColor, SkinSmoother, SparklerStar, UVPola, and VintageLens.

List of Effects

BlackMist This PPT simulates a ‘black mist’ diffusion filter. This type of diffusion effect has been used in many films. The Black Mist PPT may be used with film or video originated material to create a more diffuse look. Similar diffusion filter have been used by top cinematographers since the silent-film era. This processor may also be used to remove the ‘video edge’ from video-originated material (whether digital or analog), to give video a more sophisticated film-like smoothness. Cinematographers and colorists may utilize this processor in the DI (digital intermediate) or other color-correction process.

BleachBypass A process (also called ‘skip-bleach’ or ‘ENR’) was developed by Miyazawa Kazuo in the late 1950’s to reduce saturation and latitude of film. The process has been used as a dramatic effect in many notable films such as; Seven, Fight Club, Saving Private Ryan, 300, Stealing Beauty, etc.. This PPT may be used with film or video, or 3d generated material. A note for editors: the Bleach Bypass PPT may be applied to ‘effected’ footage for editing a project or sequence, to convey mood. Cinematographers and colorists may utilize this processor in the DI (digital intermediate) or other color-correction process.

GlowDark This process is often used to soften the darker areas of generated imagery to make 3d renders look ‘more real’. Dark glows have been used in films such as ‘Day After Tomorrow’ to blend CG elements with live-action plates. This processor may also be used with film or video originated material to add a unique diffusion to the darker areas of the images. Glow Dark can also be used to remove the edginess from digital video. Motion graphics artists and other designers may also find this PPT useful for processing graphic elements. Cinematographers and colorists may utilize this processor in the DI (digital intermediate) or other color-correction process.

GoldReflector This PPT adds a ‘golden glow’ to skin tones-- similar to using a gold-reflector on-set. Gold reflectors are used commonly to add a richness and a healthy glow to skin tones by award-winning cinematographers and glamor photographers. This PPT has efficiently ‘re-lit’ every color/shade of skin tone we have tested it with. Gold Reflector may also be used to effectively ‘warm-up’ other foreground or background elements with tones similar to skin, though without changing the sky (for example). This effect may be useful for desert scenes, beaches, etc.. The reflector’s brightness and clip are adjustable, as are the softness (of glow) and amount of overall effect. We have found this to be a very useful processor for blending elements in composites. Gold Reflector can also be used with film or video, or 3d generated material.

Halo Halo is an advanced Glow effect. Glow effects may be useful for cinematographers and editors, visual effects compositors, motion graphics artists, or other artists for other design purposes. Glow may be used as a ‘special effect’ when added to a particular element (a stream of flames, for example), or to entire scenes. Halo may also be used subtly as a unique and customizable diffusion filter. Halo softness and brightness, as well and contrast, value(gain) and gamma are adjustable. Additionally, we added a saturation control for the Halo as well. Amount controls the overall amount of the effect.

LightFixer Light Fixer is a very unique PPT. Light Fixer is a hybrid diffusion and scaling processor to effectively add depth and atmosphere to images. Controls are; Light softness, light boost, light center, light soft-edge, and amount. Cinematographers and colorists may find Light Fixer to be an indispensable tool for DI (digital intermediate) or other color-correction processes. Light Fixer is a unique, fast, and elegant processor.

NightVision Nightvision is a processor designed to simulate ‘nightvision’ equipment used by military, news gathering, and surveillance groups worldwide. Controls are; glow brightness and glow center for the image glow, and grain amount and grain brightness for image noise found in night vision equipment. Also, optics are added-- radius (a circular matte) and optics aspect (for the shape of the optics). The optics can be removed entirely. This processor may be used to simulate the optics of night vision equipment, or to create other lo-fi video looks.

ReverseColor Reverse Color is a unique processor. Reverse Color essentially inverts the chroma channels within an image. This leads to unique and difficult-to-describe results. Skin-tones become blue, greenleaves become violet, etc.. This effect may be used in Music Videos, or for dream-like sequences in films or other projects. This processor may also be used with 3d animated renders. This processor may also be used *twice* in a row to give an interesting look to images. It appears to essentially polarize yellow (instead of blue). This processor is a unique new tool for Cinematographers or Colorists while in the DI (digital intermediate), or other color-correction process.

SkinSmoother Skin Smoother processor is designed to spatially smooth skin tones. Skin Smoother is intelligent-- it may be used on entire scenes without the need to tweak or automate settings, or the need to key actors’ skin tones. This processor may be used to smooth porous or finely discolored skin. Skin Smoother can also remove high-frequency noise and grain from skin areas. This processor may be used by Cinematographers and Colorists within the DI (digital intermediate) or other color-correctionprocess. Skin Smoother may also be utilized by visual effects Compositors to do specific ‘VFX makeup’ shots. This processor may be used with chroma keyers (such as our free 3dKeyer) and with rotoscoped mattes to futher isolate certain actors or body parts to be further smoothed. Softness controls the size of the softness operator, and amount controls the amount of processing.

SparklerStar Sparkler Star is a unique variation of a star filter. While not intended to simulate traditional physical star filters, Sparkler Star generates dazzling star-like glows (or sparkles) with adjustable Chromatic Offset. Chromatic Offset, essentially, gives the star-like sparkles a rainbow look. This unique effect may be used by Cinematographers or Colorists to simulate vintage optical filters within the DI (Digital Intermediate) process. Sparkler Star may also be used by Motion Graphics artists to create vivid sparkles to elements. Compositors may use Sparkler Star to add star-like glows to various light sources (street lights, space ship engines, etc..

UVPola UV/Pola is a simulated polarizing filter. Specifically, this PPT simulates the attenuation of blue light waves through the polarizing filter. Also, a haze-removal processor (’Density’) is added. UVPola can be an extremely handy tool for Cinematographers and Colorists, to match shots shot with varying degrees of physical filtration. This processor may also be used to process entire exterior scenes, where added richness may be desired during the DI (digital intermediate) or other color-correction process. UVPola may also be useful to VFX Compositors to match elements, or to add richness and density to washed-out plates. ‘Color Balance’ post-affects the blue balance of the image.

VintageLens Vintage Lens simulates qualities of older, pre-coated optics. This processor may be used by Cinematographers and colorists during the DI (digital intermediate) or other color-correction process to give entire projects, or selected scenes/shots a vintage look. Vintage Lens may be especially useful when a project is shot with modern lenses (for matching purposes), but where a vintage-optics look is desired. Vintage optics have been used in recent films such as; ‘Saving Private Ryan’ and ‘Margot at the Wedding’. Vintage Lens may also be used by Compositors, to match elements created with older lenses, or to create unique looks.
