Description

Used in Miramax’s movie, “The Aviator,” Psunami generates precise 3D geometry of an ocean surface, then produces ultra-realistic ray-traced output that looks like real water, from flat pools to raging high seas. Choose from hundreds of editable controls, and even place your camera underwater for the ultimate immersive effect. Psunami has been used in many feature films, television productions and commercials.

Highlights

  • Ultra-realistic output - Psunami uses Arete Image Software’s RenderWorld ray-tracing engine — the same one used in movies such as Titanic, The Truman Show, Cast Away and Pearl Harbor. With features such as swell controls, air and light optics, wind, displacement mapping, depth of field control, reflection mapping, and tiling, your water effects will fool the experts.
  • Complete camera control - Psunami lets you fly your camera in 3D space above the water, on the water’s surface, or even below the water, for the ultimate in realism. Set the field of view to determine how much surface detail is visible.
  • Easy animation options - Need to add an object on the water, such as a boat or a buoy? Psunami makes it easy to composite objects into your water scene. Time stretch features help to create slow-motion scenes, while animating the Wind properties can quickly change the look of your waves.

Features

  • True Reflection Mapping - Let your water reflect the sky of your choice
  • Displacement Mapping - Create compelling custom effects such as whirlpools or wakes
  • Atmospheric Effects - Add fog, rainbows or haze
  • Time-saving Grayscale Mode - Grayscale mode allows for speedy setup and preview
  • DOF Rendering - Depth of field rendering makes it easy to composite additional layers
  • Tiling Feature - Defining tiled water patterns helps speed rendering while retaining realism
  • Rendering Options - A range of choices to that suits your time and project
  • Water Loops - Create seamless looping water effects that animate flawlessly

Support

Additional features?

Will there be any additional features added to Psunami, or are you guys simply in maintenance mode at this point?

Specifically, I'm wondering about support for whitecaps. Right now anything beyond a ripple just doesn't look realistic because it's missing whitecaps and foam caused by the wind.

We are planning new features, but white caps is probably not among them unfortunately. It's very difficult to do convincingly.

You can use a texture map which will look ok and you can tweak it to taste.

Is there any way to generate foam on the waves with Psunami ?

Unfortunately, no. However, you can use a texture map which can look pretty good and you can tweak it to taste. Check out this AE CS3 project: http://www.digitalanarchy.com/da_stuff/psunami_example.zip . Uses noise and/or Foam mixed with Fractal Noise for the texture map.

Very clear lake

Does anyone have any effects settings they can share for a very clear lake. I'm trying to get a shot at wave height with crystal clear water, but I can't get the right settings for the water and still have it realistic looking.

Should get you started. Let me know if it helps. The difficult part is getting the waves small. You really don't want any specular highlight (Glitter Scale), as that is more likely to reveal artifacts. You also want the grid size to be very small. Like .1 for Fine Grid. Set Wind Speed to 2 or 3 and Wave Smoothness to 1.

Depth Map and Realistic mode: Why same rendering time?

I found that rendering a Depth Map takes about the same render time as Realistic Mode.

Shouldn't Depth Map Mode take significantly less time to render, since raytracing is not required? Is there any way to reduce render time for Depth Map?

It's still using raytracing as it still needs to render the full 3D waves (unlike wireframe). All the normal wave simulation calculations have to be run and then rendered. There's no way around it, if we didn't raytrace the waves, the depth map wouldn't match up exactly with the regular waves making the depth map useless as a compositing tool

FCP Motion plugin questions

I'm evaluating the Psunami demo to see if it will work in my application--an underwater shot of a greenscreened submarine--by following the underwater tutorial. But as loaded into Motion, the Psunami plugin doesn't have a presets button. Is Psunami missing something, or am I missing something, or is there a list/screenshot of the "Underwater > Caribbean" parameters so that I can re-create that preset in the Inspector?

Is there a way (a hack perhaps) to adjust the camera elevation button to below -10 m, or can you fiddle with the other parameters to give the appearance that the camera is much lower in the water?

There's no preset manager in FCP/Motion. We will probably just do regular Motion presets in the near future but for now the presets aren't available, except in After Effects. The FxPlug API didn't support the way we did the UI for the Preset Manager, so it would have been a huge amount of work to get it functioning.

Elevation goes to -100 in After Effects. This is probably something that can be fixed for Motion. Originally the -10 limit had to do with the way Motion used the After Effects API, but now that it's an FxPlug it should support the full Elevation range. A fix will probably be included in the next maintenance release. Probably a few weeks.

If you have After Effects, that will probably work better for the shot you're envisioning.

I've saved out screenshots of the Caribbean Underwater preset so you can copy the parameters. http://www.digitalanarchy.biz/customers/caribbean.zip .
