Reason Studios Reason

The complete music making software

Reason has everything you need to sound like you. It’s a virtual Rack where you wire up instruments and effects to create the sounds you’re looking for. You can use it as a plugin or a full-blown DAW with recording, sequencing, mixing, and everything else you’d expect. Fast, fluid, and fun, Reason is all about making music—however you make music.

What is Reason?

Reason is the Rack and the devices. Reason is a plugin and a DAW. Reason is the wires and the workflow. Reason is your musical ideas and your final result.

THE HEART OF REASON

If Reason was a song, the Rack would be the hook. Wire up instruments, effects, and Player MIDI effects to create the sound you’re looking for. Or discover something completely new.

What is the Rack?

The Rack is the core of Reason. Filled to the brim with unique devices, it’s where you set up your dream studio. Just like a real hardware rack, everything is right there ready to be tweaked. Whether you just want to play a great-sounding piano or design a complex generative sound system, the Reason Rack is where the music happens.

Reason everywhere

Bring the Rack to your favorite DAW as a VST3, AU, or AAX plugin, or use Reason as standalone music making software. Take the best patches from Reason into Ableton Live, add a rack of instruments to Pro Tools, or expand your channel strips in Logic. However you make music, the Rack’s there for you.

Sound Like You

Start with an instrument or load up a patch from the thousands included in Reason. Drag in effects to mold your sound. Add a Player MIDI effect to transform your playing or to start new ideas. Experimentation in the Rack is fun and fast—just drop in new stuff and hear what happens.

Flip The Rack

Scary to some and strangely irresistible to others, the back of Reason’s Rack is where you can go full modular with free routing of audio and control voltage. Control synth filters from envelope followers, pan with LFOs, or split up an audio signal for parallel processing.

Everything is automatically connected for you in a logical top-to-bottom flow, but you’re free to break the rules. Don’t worry if this feels confusing—you can make music in Reason without ever flipping to the back of the Rack. (But we really think you should try it.)

Devices

Reason comes jam-packed with a huge collection of unique synthesizers, instruments, samplers, drum machines, audio effects, and much more. Our devices have been lovingly hand-crafted in Sweden since we started in 1994.  By music makers, for music makers.

  • Instruments – Drums, bass, piano, synths, strings, percussion, textures, keys, mallets, organ, woodwind. Reason comes with just about every instrument you can imagine.Explore Instruments →
  • Players – Players are MIDI effects that can both transform your playing and play for you. Sequencers, chord generators, drummers, arpeggiators—it’s the fastest way to new ideas. Use them with devices in the Rack or send MIDI out to your DAW of choice.
  • Effects – From studio staples to creative sound mangling, Reason’s effects can shape your sound the way you want.Learn more about effects →
  • Utilities – Not the flashiest but very useful, utilities are here to help you route and modulate your way around the Reason Rack.

The Combinator

The most popular device in Reason is one you might not even realize that you’re using. The Combinator combines multiple devices into self-contained patches that are found all throughout Reason’s sound bank and Sound Packs.

Design your own front panel—adding knobs, faders, and buttons to build your own Rack device powered by Reason’s synths and effects. Assign the controls to whatever parameters you want and save your new Combinator for use whenever, wherever.

Rack Extensions

Rack Extensions expand Reason with whatever your music needs today. And tomorrow. They’re fully integrated with audio and CV cables, native undo, one browser, and one way to download and update. If a new OS version or architecture rolls around, your Rack Extensions will continue to work. With hundreds of devices available in the Shop, from indie developers to well-known brands, you can always expand your Reason Rack with new gear.

The Studio

From your first beat to your next album, Reason is the music making software for capturing and exploring your ideas. Easy to get started yet deep as you want it to be, it’s everything you need to sound like you.

Sequencer

Record, edit, arrange. Capture your playing or draw in notes and automation curves with the mouse. Then get into the details with all the editing features you need to make it the perfect (or imperfect) performance.

Sequence pattern changes, edit multiple MIDI clips, curve automation, get the perfect groove with ReGroove, and transform your music with smart editing features. Reason’s sequencer is fast, flexible, and fun.

Recording

From a simple vocal take to a full band session, the recording workflow is easy and fast. No dialog boxes to break your flow. Need to nail a tricky performance? The comp editor helps you stitch multiple takes together into a perfect one. You can even record first and pick a tempo later. Reason’s famous project-wide time stretch will change the tempo of your entire song while still sounding great.

Audio Editing

With your audio recorded, it’s time to polish your tracks to perfection. Correct timing problems with Slice Edit—or mess things up further. Fix up your vocal recordings with Pitch Edit for detailed control over pitch, time, and articulation. And best of all: it sounds good. Really, really good!

Mixer

Accurately modeled after the famous SSL 9000k* analog mixing desk, Reason’s mixer works just like the real thing. Complete with flexible routing, full dynamics, EQ, advanced effects handling, automation, group and parallel channels, and the famous master-bus compressor. If the best studios in the world have it, why shouldn’t you?

Any products or trademarks mentioned are solely used to identify the products whose sound was studied during development and/or for comparison purposes only.

Sampling

All samplers in Reason are actually samplers. Hit the sample button and start recording straight into the selected instrument, bringing the lost art of on-the-fly sampling back again. So it’s time to dig out your toy keyboards, weird percussion, and vinyl collection to give them new life inside Reason.

Blocks

Intro, verse, chorus, bridge—if that’s how you think about your music then Blocks will help you build your song. Create your parts as Blocks and arrange them into a musical structure. With the basic arrangement laid out you can easily create variations, mute individual parts, or add further musical elements on top.

Plugin

Bring your favorite plugins to the Rack. Rack Extensions are fully integrated plugins specifically for Reason that sit perfectly among your devices, available in the Shop. Reason also hosts VST3 and VST2 plugins so you always have access to any tools you want to sound like you.

SYNC

Reason plays well with others, live or in the studio. Use Ableton Link to wirelessly sync your software or send MIDI clock from Reason to keep your hardware perfectly in time.

CONTROL

Play and control Reason with any MIDI controller. Just plug in your keyboard and start playing or get hands-on with Remote for tight integration between Reason and your MIDI hardware.

Control your hardware with MIDI out from Reason’s sequencer and Player MIDI effects. Hooking up a Player to sequence your gear is something you really need to try.

What’s new in Reason 10?

Europa Shapeshifting Synthesizer

Europa was created for huge, epic sounds and oh boy, does it deliver… From big stacks of buzzing sawteeth to shimmering, glitched-up sonic explorations, Europa has you covered. To call it a wavetable synth wouldn’t be wrong, but it’s so much more than that. Apply a wide range of modulation to the waveform itself, to start with. Add advanced spectral filtering, harmonics processing and even draw your custom waveforms. And the best part: despite it’s deep synthesis powers, it’s still surprisingly easy to use.

Grain Sample Manipulator

Get granular with your samples! The Grain synthesizer opens up the world of granular synthesis for your creative use. Drop any sample into Grain and explore the endless sonic variations you can create with Grain’s selection of playback algorithms, ultra-flexible modulation, routing, and effects. With immense sonic power and an inviting interface, Grain is the easy-to-use sonic lab that turns your samples into grains and your grains into music.

New sampled instruments

Reason 10 puts three brand new organic instrument collections in your Reason rack. Expertly crafted in cooperation with sampling experts Soundiron, these new devices offer a wealth of inspiring and natural-sounding instruments to your music making.

Klang Tuned Percussion – A collection of tuned percussion instruments
Glockenspiel, Music Box, Wineglasses and a whole lot more. Tuned percussion sounds are great for creating melody lines or adding an organic dimension to an electronic production.

Pangea World Instruments – The sounds of planet Earth
Add more colors to your sonic palette with this collection of instruments full of character from all corners of the world. Plucked, pumped, blown or strummed, these instruments will add a new dimension to any style of music.

Humana Vocal Ensemble – Choir and vocal instrument
Give your music a human touch with the sound of Humana’s selection of choirs and solo voices. Perfect for soundtracks or epic pop ballads, these singers will add depth and harmony to your music.

More sounds, more inspiration

  • Fixed a bug where Reason couldn’t start if there was a broken Rack Extension.
