Transforming Transcription, Search & Video Editing

Digital Anarchy Transcriptive Rough Cutter is the next evolution of collaborative transcript-based video editing.

Creating text-based video edits in Premiere Pro and online is now easier than ever. Transcriptive Rough Cutter for Premiere, the PowerSearch metadata search engine and Transcriptive Web App make it easy to transcribe and edit your video by editing text. Their integration with Premiere Pro and each other allows Adobe users to create collaborative, transcript-based rough cuts in Premiere Pro and quickly share transcripts online. By using either the Rough Cut or Selects editing workflow, Transcriptive Rough Cutter provides two powerful ways to assemble video in Premiere.

Transcriptive for Premiere Pro

The panel is fully integrated with Premiere Pro. Editors can get A.I. transcripts (or import them from elsewhere), edit the text for captions, or assemble rough-cuts based on the edits made in their transcript.

Take advantage of Transcriptive AI to get transcripts or import transcripts from Adobe, human services or even other A.I. services to edit video through text. Search for keywords with PowerSearch*, add comments to transcripts, and share your work with producers, clients, and other video editors without leaving Premiere. Shared content can be accessed by other Premiere Pro editors or through our Transcriptive Web App.

Transcriptive Rough Cutter for Premiere Pro is $199/license. Transcriptive-A.I. transcriptions are $0.04/min ($2.40/hr)with pre-paid minutes packages or (.08/min otherwise).

98% AI accuracy for $0.04/min

Our AI video transcription technology makes it possible to transcribe footage for less. Purchase prepaid minutes to reduce costs from $0.08/min to $0.04/min and pay $2.40 to convert 1 hour of video into text without leaving Premiere Pro.

Transcriptive AI Premium is also available for $0.15 (pay-as-you-go) or $0.12 with pre-paid minutes. the Premium option offers high accuracy even when transcribing low quality audio and increased transcription speed.

Prepaid minutes packages are available in bulk for $150 or $500. Users can also choose to pay as you go with a credit card for $0.15/min(Transcriptive AI Premium) or $0.08/min (Transcriptive AI).

Transcriptive Web App

The web app makes cross-team collaboration a quick and easy process. Log into app.transcriptive.com to transcribe, import, share, and edit transcripts online!

Use comments and strikethrough to create a ‘paper’ edit and share your work with Premiere editors or other Web App users. Combined with Transcriptive for Premiere Pro, the Web App has everything you need to speed up your video production workflow. Unlike traditional paper edits, your edits in the Transcriptive Web App will retain all their timecode and metadata. Making it easy to import back into Premiere to create a rough cut.

Transcriptive.com is $19/month or $160/year. Review-Only Free subscriptions are also available with limited functionalities.

PowerSearch

PowerSearch is free for Transcriptive for Premiere Pro users. The metadata search panel for Premiere Pro allows users to scour hours of footage for content so video editors can find sound bites much faster. Search all transcripts, clips and markers in your Premiere Pro project. PowerSearch will return results like any search engine. Clicking on the search results will open up that clip or sequence and jump to the exact time something was said. With all the dialog in your video clips transcribed into text, our PowerSearch panel works like Google for your Premiere Pro project.

Transcript-based video editing in Premiere Pro

Create rough cuts by editing text and share your work with other editors.

Transcriptive Rough Cutter for Premiere Pro is the next evolution of text-based video editing. Transcribe or sync an existing transcript, strikethrough the text you want to remove from the clip, automatically assemble the rough-cut and collaborate with your team without leaving Premiere.

Create rough cuts by editing text.

Edit a transcript in Transcription for Premiere Pro panel and the panel will quickly create a text-based sequence. The edits in the video will match the edits in the transcript, showing an instant rough cut. Video editors can also set in and out points on transcripts, insert selected soundbites into a timeline and quickly auto-generate a new transcript based on the edits.

Transcribe or Sync existing transcripts

Sync text documents to your footage or use Transcriptive AI to create new transcripts. Both are great ways of incorporating text-based editing into your workflow! Every word will have a timecode so you can easily jump to the exact time a sound bite was said. Users can choose to batch transcribe or batch align to process multiple clips at once.

Share your work with teammates and client

Share your work with other Premiere users or take advantage of Transcriptive.com to collaborate with teammates and clients working outside of the Adobe app. Receive new transcriptions and edits made online without leaving Premiere Pro, take advantage of the Comment and Strikethrough features to share notes, and assemble collaborative rough cuts in no time.

Transcriptive 3.1

New Transcriptive A.I. Premium Service

The A.I. that actually does the transcribing is not our tech, we just license it. As such, we’re constantly evaluating different A.I. services (there are many of them) and sometimes swapping them out behind the scenes if one seems better than the others. While most of the services are similarly priced, some of them are more expensive. As you might expect, they are also the most accurate.

To take advantage of this, we’re releasing a new pricing tier, Premium, that costs .15/min pay-as-you-go or .12/min if you pre-pay the minutes.

We still offer the .08-.04/min pricing tier that gives you the lowest per minute cost of any service out there and at the same quality as what most services are offering.

New Features

In addition to updating the A.I. Service menu to include TS A.I. Premium, Transcriptive Rough Cutter v.3.1 also adds a number of new feature and improvements to its transcription workflow, including:

  • Easy Adobe Transcripts Import: You can now import SRTs generated wtih Adobe’s new Text Panel (and transcription service) and Transcriptive will automatically align them, giving them timecode just as if you had used Transcriptive A.I. (of course, you should compare the accuracy of the two services to understand why Adobe Sensei is free).
  • Create Markers for Each Transcript Sentence: For users who want the transcript shown as markers on their timelines, Marker Export can now save each sentence as a separate marker.
  • SRT Sentence Splitting: When Exporting an SRT file out of Transcriptive, you have the option of having a new line created for new sentences.
  • Text Editor Improvements: We’ve tweaked/fixed a few things in the Text Editor to make it work more like a word processor. Selecting, copying and pasting functionalities now behave more like you’d expect, so users can easily add missing segments to the transcribed text, as well as quickly replace highlighted words with the correct text or sentence.

Trasncriptive 2.5.1

  • Comments: you can now add comments to a paragraph/line of the transcript. So if you want to remind yourself of something or other people are viewing the transcript, you can add notes.
  • Strikethrough: You can strikethrough a paragraph/line if you want to leave it and delete it later.
  • Added logic to prevent users from submitting duplicate transactions (and getting charged twice).
  • Improved the VTT exporter.
  • Improved how we handle Multicam transcripts.
  • Rewrote how we generate invoices, which hopefully makes them much clearer and informative.
  • Markers: We’ve added the option to remove the ‘Transcriptive’ tag that started every marker, making them more readable in the timeline. This has a negative side effect, that tag allows us to _only_ remove Transcriptive markers if you want to replace them at a later time. Without the tag, we assume they are markers you added and we don’t overwrite them. With the tag, we remove them before laying down the new markers. This is important if you add the markers before editing the transcript, then want to replace them later with the edited transcript.

Transcriptive 2.0.5

This NEW version of our transcription and video search plugin for Adobe Premiere Pro CC will work with Premiere Pro 14.0.2. You’ll need to register with a speech service to use Transcriptive.

Transcriptive 2.0.4

Premiere 14.1 is out and we just released a new version of Transcriptive, 2.0.4. As with the previous version, Adobe’s new Javascript engine (called NewWorld) needs to be turned off. 2.0.4 automatically does this for you. It also dramatically improves building transcripts from clips that already have been transcribed.

This has some substantial changes in how we import the transcripts from saved metadata. It should do a much more accurate job building the transcript from sequences with many clips and many cuts. So it’s definitely a recommended update for more complex projects.

Also, Transcriptive 2.0.4 now requires a restart of Premiere Pro to run in 14.0.3 and above.

Transcriptive 2.0.3

21 February 2020

Adobe has slipped in a pretty huge change into 14.0.2 and it seriously affects Transcriptive. I’ll get into the details in a moment, but let me get into the important stuff right off the bat:

  • If you are using Premiere 14.0.2 (the latest release)
    • And own Transcriptive 2.0…
      •  You need to update to v2.0.3 immediately.
    • And own Transcriptive 1.x…
      • You can upgrade to Transcriptive 2.x
      • Or you must turn ‘NewWorld’ off (instructions are below)
      • Or keep using Premiere Pro 14.0.1

For the most part Transcriptive is written in Javascript. This relies on Premiere’s ability to process and run that code. In Premiere 14.0.2, Adobe has quietly replaced the very old Extendscript interpreter with a more modern Javascript engine (It’s called ‘NewWorld’ in Adobe parlance and you can read more about it and some of the tech-y details on the Adobe Developer Blog). On the whole, this is a good thing.

However, for any plugin using Javascript, it’s a big, big deal. And, unfortunately, it’s a big, big deal for Transcriptive. It completely breaks old versions of Transcriptive.

If you’re running Transcriptive 2.x, no problem… we just released v2.0.3 which should work fine with both old and new Javascript Interpreter/engine.

If you’re using Transcriptive 1.x, it’s still not exactly a problem but does require some hoop jumping. (and eventually ‘Old World’ will not be supported in Premiere and you’ll be forced to upgrade TS. That’s a ways off, though.)

Turning Off New World

Here are the steps to turn off ‘NewWorld’ and have Premiere revert back to using ‘Old World’:

  • Press Control + F12 or Command + F12. This will bring up Premiere’s Console.
  • From the Hamburger menu (three lines next to the word ‘Console’), select Debug Database View
  • Scroll down to ScriptLayerPPro.EnableNewWorld and uncheck the box (setting it to False).
  • Restart Premiere Pro

When Premiere restarts, NewWorld will be off and Transcriptive 1.x should work normally.

new world

So far there are no new major bugs and relatively few minor ones that we’re aware of when using Transcriptive 2.0.3 with Premiere 14.0.2 (with NewWorld=On). There are also a LOT of other improvements in 2.0.3 that have nothing to do with this.

Adobe actually gave us a pretty good heads up on this. Of course, in true Anarchist fashion, we tested it early on (and things were fine) and then we tested it last week and things were not fine. So it’s been an interesting week and a half scrambling to make sure everything was working by the time Adobe sent 14.0.2 out into the world.

So everything seems to be working well at this point. And if they aren’t, you now know how to turn off all the new fangled stuff until we get our shit together! (but we do actually think things are in good shape)

Transcriptive 1.5.1

Download links:

Jim says that your serial number should automatically be recognized. To try the demo, click here for a demo serial number or email sales@toolfarm.com for an extended trial. The biggest new feature is the ability to merge transcripts. This allows you to work on different sequences and then combine them in a final edit to get the final transcript. It’s something that’s been requested for a while and it also helps with the bug on Premiere Mac. If you have a long transcript you can work on it in 30-40 minute chunks and then combine them. To also help work around that bug, the panel now monitors memory and will restart itself if memory gets low. You don’t need to restart Premiere to solve the memory issue, just close and open the panel. So we try and do this automatically.

What’s new in Transcriptive 1.5?

The biggest new feature is the ability to use the Transcriptive A.I. service. You’ll need to create an account on Transcriptive.com to use it, but it’s then accessible in the panel. This tends to be more accurate than Speechmatics, but it’s also more expensive at .12/min. However, Transcriptive A.I.’s Align function is only .02/min.

We’ve removed Watson from the panel. The main reason we included Watson was because they offered 1000 minutes free per month. This discontinued that in December. That combined with their other constant changes which regularly broke the login process and made it inaccessible until we fixed it, made it the right decision to remove it. We realize that removes the lowest cost option but we hope to have some announcements after NAB that will reduce the cost of the other services.

Performance on long transcripts should be improved. We fixed some bugs and made a bunch of optimizations that should make overall usability much snappier.

A few important UI changes:

  • The Import button is now front and center
  • The Status Field has been replaced with a Notification menu
  • There’s an Account menu to help manage your Transcriptive.com account.
  • The Jobs dialog shows you all your transcripts regardless of what service you used.
  • The Lock Transcriptive button (padlock) now changes color.

Of course, as mentioned we worked around the Adobe bug that is crashing Premiere and corrupting projects. For Transcriptive to work in 13.0.2 or 13.0.3  you MUST go to the Transcriptive Main Menu and select Update Project. We highly recommend you do this in 13.0.1 as large projects may crash Premiere before Project’s metadata can be updated.

This completely addresses the bug on Windows.

Also, on Mac, there’s another memory leak that can cause the machine to crash. This does not corrupt the project file, so it’s not catastrophic but we realize it’s still a pain in the ass. If you start to notice the Mac get sluggish, close Transcriptive immediately. Reopen Transcriptive, you don’t need to quit Premiere, and you should be fine for a while. You can also keep an eye on the Activity Monitor and see if Memory is almost maxed out.

We are working on the Mac issue and hope to have some sort of fix soon.

What’s new in Transcriptive 1.2.1?

The latest free update to the Transcriptive Premiere panel fixes a lot of bugs (without hopefully adding too many new ones), adds better support for Transcriptive.com, and adds a few more minor improvements.

The highlight tracking is much improved, so if you’re having issues with the highlight going off the screen it’s worth updating.

What’s new in Transcriptive 1.2?

Support for human transcript import

  1. If you import Plain Text files, we can detect timestamps with certain timecode formats and will use those to assign timecode to every word. So if you get a file from a transcription service with timestamps, we’ll be able to use those to get timecode per word. It’s only as accurate as the frequency of the timestamps. More timestamps, better accuracy.
  2. Better SRT import: If you get an SRT file back from a transcription service, we can VERY accurately give every word timecode. The cool thing is that now there’s a Merge Lines option in SRT Import. This will combine lines until it finds a period or other punctuation. So if your SRT file has punctuation but is broken up into 32 character lines, this allows very accurate import of human transcripts.

Other Improvements

  • Search and Find & Replace now support “quotes”. This means you can search for “teach” and not get returned ‘teaching’ or ‘teacher’, only “teach”.
  • Support for UTF-8 and UTF-16 for non-English languages.
  • Transcriptive can now be locked onto a single sequence. So if you’re moving between sequences but only one sequence has a transcript that you’re editing, you can now Lock it. This will prevent Transcriptive from constantly trying to load transcripts for sequences you don’t care about.
  • Proxy Server support: If you’re on a network with a firewall and have a proxy server set up, we can now use it for sending files out for A.I. transcription.

What’s new in Transcriptive 1.1.2?

  • Added VTT support for YouTube captions – import human created transcripts and assign timecode to every word just like the A.I. transcripts.
  • EBU-STL files are also now supported for Export.
  • Plus many bug fixes

What’s new in Transcriptive 1.1?

New Power Search Beta Panel

What’s new in Transcriptive 1.0.3?

You can now import VTT files from YouTube! YouTube has an extremely good Speech-to-Text algorithm and will automatically generate captions. For free. Just upload the video (you can keep it Private), wait for it to generate the captions (this takes a while), and then download the VTT file. You can import that into Transcriptive for editing and searching your video.

 Improved UI:

  • Visual indicator when you’re in Edit mode. A blue line will appear around the paragraph you’re editing. If you get distracted this will make it much easier to see what mode you’re in.
  • Buttons for Split/Merge Paragraph. Very handy if you forget the keyboard shortcuts for this very critical feature.
  • Improved the messages in the Status Window.
  • Added Delete Speech Analysis to the Main Menu. This is helpful if you’ve made edits to the transcript and want to save those into the Metadata. Occasionally in batch a clip will get the wrong transcript and this will help solve that issue.

Bug Fixes:

  • Drop Frame/Non Drop Frame: Previously we were not detecting Non Drop sequences. This was causing very long clips to have the timing wrong. There’s an option in the Preference file that you can set if you’re experiencing this. Unfortunately Premiere does not allow us to detect this automatically.
  • Undo. Premiere 2018 pretty much broke Undo and it’s now working again. It’s still possible to get it to misbehave but you have to be really trying.
  • Better tracking of which sequence is selected. It’s no longer possible to edit a sequence’s transcript if you’ve requested a transcript for a different sequence (and Transcriptive is still waiting for it to come back from the Speech Service). In some cases this was causing the transcript to end up in the wrong sequence overwriting that sequence’s transcript.
  • Bunch of small bugs. Just continued maintenance and cleaning up some of the odds and ends.
