So, you're animating someone in a bubble, are you? I've seen this sort of effect used recently in the Scooby Doo Movie and on the Disney Channel (was it, My Stepsister is an Alien? Whatever it was, it was quality television!) This could also be used to make a modern day Glenda the Good Witch floating into Oz, hence the title of the project. Geez, I watch garbage, don't I.

Instructions

  1. Open AE and import the JPEG files, background, bubble and displacement map. Set up a new Comp. Call it "Comp 1" and make it 640x480 and 10 seconds long.
  2. Drag in "Displacement.jpg" and use the "offset" effect to animate it moving upwards and to the right giving you your continual stream of noise. next add the "bulge" effect, make the bulge as high as the comp (around 238x238 works good). Close the comp.
  3. Create a new comp same size as the last one and call it "Comp 2". Drag in Bubble jpg and Comp 1. Turn off Comp 1 and apply the "displacement map" effect to bubble.jpg using comp1 as the displacement source. my displacement settings were as follows: Horizontal  -89.4.
  4. Vertical 77.7... do what ever looks good! after this apply the "bulge" effect again using the same settings as before. Select both layers and pre-compose calling the new comp "comp 3!"
  5. In Comp 3, apply a circular mask to "comp 2" making sure you get a near perfect circle as close to the same size as the bulge as you can, its better to crop in a bit than to have any flat areas showing. feather the mask at around 4 pixels or so. Drag in whatever you want to be inside the bubble and put it underneath Comp 2. Change the opacity of comp 2 to around 50% or so...the opacity settings will vary depending on what background you are going to put the bubble on. Close comp 3.
  6. Create a new comp (same size as the rest!) and drag in Comp 3 and a background plate. scale Comp 3 to whatever size you want your bubble to be then animate the little bugger and watch it float!!!

This doesn't exactly look like a REAL bubble, but I thought it looked pretty damn groovy!!!

Side note... all my displacement maps and stuff were made in Photoshop using airbrush set to "difference" using 2 kinds of blue.....

till next time....

may the fluff be with you.
