NAB 2018: My Week in Photos, Part 2 of 2

NAB 2018: My Week in Photos, Part 2 of 2
News, Events Apr 23, 2018 at 09:01 AM

Here is the second batch of photos. It took a long time to go through these and decide which photos and stories to tell about the week. We literally have several hundred photos from the MediaMotion Ball alone! It was a pretty intense week, filled with visual effects, bright lights, and lots of friends. Enjoy part 2!

The MediaMotion Ball

The MediaMotion Ball is a massively great event held on the Monday of NAB by the IMUG group. Toolfarm has sponsored for several years but we also volunteer. I'm the social media manager, and my husband Dan was the Red Carpet photographer. Talon from my fellow alumni, was drafted at the last minute to take candids, so we were the Toolfarm photography team!

This is the 25th anniversary of Adobe After Effects so everyone who attended received an AE 25 years cap!

Below is a small selection of photos from the evening. If you want to see all of them, and there are a few hundred, check out the MediaMotion Ball Facebook page

Mission to Mars

I thought this was going to be a live stream with the Mars rover and NASA, but it was not. It was about Amazon Web Services, a big sponsor of NAB, and a fictitious road rally by drone rovers on Mars. They had a well-known magician, Marco Tempest, in the beginning, after a long skit. The magician was great but we left after his performance. I really wanted to see Mars. I love space stuff.

Stranger Things Editors at the Avid booth

The Avid booth hosted editors from Stranger Things. I didn't realize that the editors also work on sound design. I'm a big fan of the show, so it was all very interesting to hear about how the edits go. Presenters included Dean Zimmerman, ACE editor; Kat Naranjo, editor; Nat Fuller, editor; and Casey Cichoki, assistant editor.

Andrew Kramer at the Adobe booth

We got lucky enough to have front row seats for Andrew's presentation at the Adobe booth this year. It's always super busy and this year was no different! Andrew showed how he made grass grow from rocks in a logo with only the built-in After Effects plug-ins. Genius.

Funny story. We are watching Andrew's presentation and my friend Rob Birnholz texts me from Florida and asks if we are in the front row. He recognized us from the backs of our heads on the Adobe live stream!

Also, thanks for the shirt, Matt Kramer!

Industrial Light and Magic showing VFX from Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Some VFX artists presented on the NAB Mainstage and showed their mind-blowing work from Star Wars. Noah Kadner, Contributing Writer at ASC Magazine, was the moderator. He spoke with Eddie Pasquarello, VFX Supervisor at ILM; Marla Newall, Matchmove and Layout Supervisor at ILM; and Erich Ippen, lead LookDev Technical Director at ILM. They wouldn't allow photography or video during the presentations so you get a photo of the panel.

Post|Production Campus

The Post Production Campus had lots of sessions all week. We wanted to do a few of them but only caught one, Benjamin Budzak giving hot tips for After Effects.

The Supermeet

Michael Horton and Dan Berube's great event was at the Rio. These photos were taken on my phone, not with the real camera. We sat in the back because we had another event to go to so we didn't stay for the raffle. If the first photo is showing up upside down for you, I have no idea why! It's not upside down!

Maxon Pinball Party

Always a great time, the Maxon Pinball Party is held at the Pinball Hall of Fame. They have an Asian fusion food truck out back, which is so good! This year, we played some interesting games. There were two that stuck out. One was a pinball machine where two people play across from each other and the whole machine literally tips. The second was a bicycle that you ride and pop balloons with your hoverbike. It was extremely difficult and I never got past the first level, but so much fun.

Digital Production Buzz

I was interviewed by Larry Jordan on Digital Production Buzz on Wednesday. As always, lots of fun.

Valley of Fire

After NAB, we headed to the desert to get away from the noise and lights and did a bit of hiking in the Valley of Fire, which is not far from Las Vegas. I always find that it helps me recover from NAB if I get some fresh air and see a different perspective of the area around Vegas. Here's a bit of trivia. Star Trek Generations was partly shot here and Captain Kirk met his demise.
