Update: aerender with Mac Security Bug Update
Note: Adobe fixed this issue with the release of After Effects 2022 (v22). Earlier versions of After Effects are still affected/broken.
For After Effects users using After Effects 2021 and earlier
Last month we were informed about aerender command line no longer working under the latest point release of Big Sur in After Effects. We at first thought this issue was isolated to Big Sur, but we’ve been getting a lot of customer support messages about this and found that it is also affecting Catalina and Mojave users. We’ve updated this article today to include Mojave and BG Renderer MAX.
You may see an error such as:
aerender fails on Mac OS 11.4 with error -1701 "AEGetParamPt failed at line 918"
Which OS Updates?
- Big Sur 11.4, released on 24 May 2021
- Catalina 10.15.7 Security Update 2021-003, released on 24 May 2021
- Mojave 10.14.6 Security Update 2021-004, released on 24 May 2021
This affects all tools that use background rendering and render farm tools. You may experience crashes or failed renders in the terminal.
- BG Renderer MAX
- Any tools that use background rendering in After Effects
How to Fix it
Our advice is to NOT update your OS until there is a fix. Mekajiki, the developer of Rendergarden, has submitted a bug report to Adobe regarding this issue so we are hoping for a fix soon.
Again, don’t update your OS to the latest version of Big Sur, Catalina, or Mojave, if you use Rendergarden or any tools that use the aerender command line.
If you’ve already updated, you can try and go back to the previous macOS release.
New Information from Mekajiki, Creator of RenderGarden
Greetings. We are writing today to inform you of a serious bug introduced in the latest Mac OS updates to Big Sur 11.4 and Catalina 10.15.7. Both of these updates have added new security fixes which have broken the After Effects command-line tool aerender. Like all network rendering queues and background rendering tools, RenderGarden relies on aerender to work.
Adobe is aware of the problem and working with Apple to find a solution. We were hoping that Adobe would turn around a fix immediately, but it appears that it’s taking longer than expected. Unfortunately, our hands are tied. So, until Adobe or Apple provides a fix we are recommending that our users do not upgrade Mac OS. If you have already upgraded, we recommend rolling back your OS using the recovery mode or simply return to rendering your comps from the render queue. As soon as the problem is resolved we will follow up with another email. Sorry for any inconvenience.
