Big Screen Effects: Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle

On my birthday the whole family went to see Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and it was a wild ride. The effects are insane, especially the extraordinarily realistic CGI animals. Today we’re sharing a lot of great information about how the artists created the animals, plus information on other VFX and sound design.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle was directed by Jake Kasdan and from Sony Pictures.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle Creature Effects

Montreal VFX studio Rodeo FX is the company behind the great animal VFX in Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, working directly with VFX Supervisor, Jerome Chen. And if you want to know about software used in creation of these VFX, in the article Creating CG wildlife for Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle from Post Perspective::

In terms of tools, “We used Maya and Houdini — mainly for water effects — as 3D tools, ZBrush for modeling and Nuke for compositing,” reports Lafortune. “Arnold Render was used for 3D renders, such as lighting and shading shaders.”

Iloura is another studio that created many of the effects, including the rhinos, the helicopter, and digital doubles. MPC also worked on the film and are responsible for the jaguar attack, digital doubles, and CG environments. See the full credits at IMDB.

There are lots of articles with still photos but not much for video breakdowns…. yet. We can add them in the coming months.
