Inspirations: Oz the Great and Powerful Title Sequence

I saw Oz in 3D IMAX last week and one of my favorite parts was the opening sequence, a black and white puppet show theatre with titles.

Designer Garson Yu (Yu + Co) created this opening title sequence, remincient of Georges Méliès style. It looked amazing in 3D IMAX and a video on YouTube does not do it justice. If you haven't seen it yet, make sure you see it in 3D.

Yu talks about the title sequence on the Yu + Co blog.

Also, check out Cinemablend, where they have lots of examples of inspirations for the elements in the sequence, including the phenakistoscopes. On the second page, they show some stills of elements that didn't make the cut.
