“You can easily create proxies for the large source files that you are using and After Effects will automatically link them to the item in your project panel.
You can then easily toggle your project file to switch between the original (very large) file or the much smaller proxy. By using the smaller proxy instead of the large source file, After Effects has to do less processing and thus your workflow will be sped up.
Because proxies are lower quality versions of the footage they represent, be sure not to use them for detailed work such as rotoscoping, masking or motion tracking.”
