Purchase Color Finesse
Note
"What is the difference between the version that ships with AE and the one that can be bought separately."
From Bob Currier of Synthetic Aperture:
"The LE-to-LE $149 upgrade is aimed at people who have After Effects 6.5 or 7.0 and are looking to move from Color Finesse 1.5 to 2.1.
The LE upgrade version is the same as what comes with AE CS3.
Of course, we also have the LE-to-PI upgrade, which takes you from the bundled version of Color Finesse to the PI version which can be used in non-AE host applications (i.e., FCP, Premiere, etc.)

Description
Color Finesse brings all the high-end color correction and enhancement capabilities you've ever wanted right into After Effects and Final Cut Pro. Color Finesse offers high-end color correction and enhancement tools previously available only in dedicated, high-end color correction systems.
Floating Point Color Space Unlike other color correction tools, Color Finesse isn't limited to 8-bits per color channel. In fact, it's not limited to 10- or even 16-bits per color. Color Finesse uses a 32-bit floating-point representation for each color channel, for a total of 96 bits per pixel.
By using floating point, Color Finesse is able to encode colors with great resolution, while at the same time maintaining tremendous latitude. And rounding error--the source of much of the "banding" you've seen--is virtually eliminated. Even extreme adjustments don't cause clipping of out-of-range highlights and shadows.
Above and Beyond Built-in Color Correction Most video editing software now has its own built-in color correction, but it's often limited in capability, accuracy, and performance. Often you'll need to combine several color correction filters to perform even simple correction. Each filter you add increases rounding error and image degradation. Color Finesse does all its color correction operations without needing to constantly convert formats and round, reducing errors and creating a pristine image.
Color Finesse offers more correction tools--including secondary color correction and curves--than is found in most built-in correctors.
Three-point color correction is a powerful tool, but not when you're stuck with fixed definitions of what a highlight, midtone, and shadow is. Those definitions need to change from scene to scene, so Color Finesse gives you a simple tool to let you decide on the definitions, making three-point correction more intuitive and more effective.
And Color Finesse is a true 32-bit floating point color corrector, not just "floating point capable" and not in only a few correction tools.
