Description
OpenEXR is a file format created by Industrial Light + Magic for storing High Dynamic Range (HDR) images. Whereas most file formats represent pixel values with whole integers in the range 0-255 (for an 8-bit file), HDR images use floating point (decimel) values typically ranging 0.0-1.0, but capable of going much higher. While a pixel with a value of 5.5 may get clipped to 255 (float 1.0) on a monitor, its extra brightness detail is easily seen when used in compositing or transferred to film.
ILM has made a Photoshop/After Effects plug-in available for reading OpenEXR files, but in converting the image to integer space they lose much of the HDR detail. In order to preserve this information, our EXR reader presents floating point images in Log space.
