final cut running sluggish

I have not run into problems with any other programs on my computer. Final cut has had problems opening, is running sluggish, audio is getting behind the video. I have tried the project on internal and external hard drives. I'm running final cut 2 on a macbook pro 2.4 ghz intel core duo. 2gb 667mhz
