In Depth: Plug-ins Adobe After Effects CC and Premiere Pro CC

Todd Kopriva is always a wealth of information on Adobe After Effects. Last week he posted an article on Region of Interest: plug-ins for After Effects CC (12.0). In the article, he says:
There have been few significant changes to the effect plug-in API for After Effects CC (12.0), so you shouldn’t need new versions of most plug-ins for After Effects CC (12.0), if you already have plug-ins that work for After Effects CS5, CS5.5, or CS6.
Your plug-ins should MOSTLY work fine in Adobe After Effects CC and Premiere Pro CC. Information about installing them and notes are included in this article.
Most of the plug-ins that work in After Effects and Premiere Pro CS6 should work just fine in Adobe CC. Some of them may not yet have installers at the time of this article. You will need to manually move them in those cases.
The products below are confirmed to work, but may need to be manually installed. Most others that are Adobe CS6 compatible should also work fine.
- aescripts + aeplugins – Compatible since launch of CC
- Boris FX – CC installers available
- CoreMelt – CoreMelt Complete and Lock & Load compatible since launch of CC
- Cycore FX – CC installers available soon
- Digieffects – CC Installers Now Available
- Digital Film Tools – CC Installers Available soon
- GenArts Sapphire – CC installers available
- Imagineer Systems – All mocha products work with After Effects CC.
- ISP Robuskey – CC installers are available. Photoshop
- Mettle – No installers, just drag into the plug-ins folder. Currently Windows Only. Mac compatibility coming soon.
- Neat Video /ABSoft – Compatible since launch of CC
- Noise Industries / FxPacks – CC installers ready now with version 4.0.7
- Pixelan Software – Compatible since launch of CC
- Red Giant – CC installers ready now
- RE:Vision Effects – CC installers ready now
- Rowbyte – Compatible since launch of CC
- Silhouette FX – v5.1.2 installer now automatically finds the After Effects Creative Cloud install location.
- SmartSound – Compatible since launch of CC
- Tiffen – CC Installers Available soon
- Trapcode – CC installers ready now
- Video Copilot – CC installer in Element 3D v 1.6.1 now available
- Zaxwerks – CC compatible
I will keep updating the list as we have confirmed information (last updated August 9, 2013).

If you want to manually move or make an alias to plug-ins into Adobe CC because there is not yet an installer, here’s where you need to put them:
Macintosh HD > Library > Application Support > Adobe > Common > Plug-ins > 7.0 > MediaCore
For Mac OSX Users:
- Go to this directory: /Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Common/Plug-ins/CS6/Media Core/
- Copy the BCC and/or FEC plug-ins
- Paste the copied plug-ins into this directory: /Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Common/Plug-ins/7.0/MediaCore/
RED, Graffiti and FX
- Go to this directory: /Macintosh HD/Applications/Adobe Premiere Pro CS6
- Right click on Premiere Pro.app and select “Show Package Contents”
- Go to …/Premiere Pro/Contents/Plug-Ins/Common
- Copy “Boris RED.bundle” and/or “BorisGraffiti.bundle or BorisFX.bundle” files
- Paste the copied .bundle files into this directory:Macintosh HD/Applications/Adobe Premiere Pro CC/ (Right click on Premiere Pro.app and select “Show Package Contents” /Contents/Plug-Ins/Common)
For PC Users:
- Go to this directory: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Common\Plug-ins\CS6\Media Core\
- Copy the BCC or FEC plug-ins
- Paste the copied plug-ins into this directory: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Common\Plug-ins\7.0\Media Core\
For RED, Graffiti and FX
- Go to this directory: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Premiere Pro CS6\Plug-Ins\Common\
- Copy FL7-BorisFX10 and/or FL7-BorisGraffiti6 FL7-BorisRED5 as well as FX6-BorisFX10 FX6-BorisGraffiti6 and/or FX6-BorisRED5
- Paste the copied files into this directory: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Premiere Pro CC\Plug-Ins\Common\
Todd Kopriva says:
One thing that I do that works for most plug-ins is to create a shortcut/alias in the new plug-in folder that points to old plug-in folder, so the new version of the application loads plug-ins from the old location. If you do this, you need to be careful to put the alias/shortcut at the right, lower level–i.e., not at the top level of the plug-ins folder–so that you’re only loading specific plug-ins from the old location; otherwise, you’ll get warnings about duplicate plug-ins.
Pete Litwinowitz of RE:Vision Effects warns:
Don’t put into Plug-ins folder in Applications folder for our plug-ins, because our installers will get confused when you download updates at a later date.
It’s likely that other developers will have the same problem with plug-ins installed in the Plug-ins folder. Just don’t do it.
Nick Campbell talks about support of plug-ins for Cineware and CINEMA 4D Lite on his blog. Nick says:
This one is tricky to answer. I did a demo of some of the Greyscalegorilla plugins including Light Kit and Transform and those were supported. However, from what I am told, some plugins will not be supported.
VRay and 3rd Party Renderers will not work at this time.
