Filling the codec gap - all the codecs and features you need

AfterCodecs plugins for Adobe CC, giving you the best and missing codecs for faster exports!

After Effects, Premiere Pro, and Adobe Media Encoder native exporters bringing you ProRes / H264 / H265 / HAP codecs for excellent quality and lightweight videos, on Windows and OSX, no Quicktime needed.

ProRes on Windows, H264 8K (not limited to 4K) and a fast YouTube export profile easy to use, HAP codecs – Finally say goodbye to Quicktime!

Better and faster compression

AfterCodecs uses ffmpeg to encode H264 and H265:

  • Low bitrates videos are of better quality than before
  • Choose the efficiency you need : fast encoding for your previews or low filesize for final delivery
  • Save time directly in AE render queue without touching the command line and having huge temporary files

AfterCodecs ProRes rendering is on average 15% faster than QuickTime

AfterCodecs AE vs. Exporting with AME

AfterCodecs will create a smaller, better looking file directly in the After Effects render queue. What’s not to love?

Filling the codec gap

AfterCodecs brings you with consistency all the codecs & features you need, without Quicktime and in .MP4 and .MOV:

  • ProRes 422 / 4444 / XQ : yes even on Windows and older versions of Adobe. Included a new ProRes 4444 Light unofficial profile to get both Alpha channel and lower filesize
  • All 4 HAP codecs from Vidvox but with faster algorithms and without resolution restrictions
  • Special Premiere Pro & Media Encoder features : MultiRenders Markers, Export all Audio tracks separately, Quick sub resolutions buttons, Custom Frame rate, etc.

H264 / H265 : the best and fastest compression

  • Choose the efficiency you need: fast encoding for your previews or low filesize for final delivery. Low bitrates videos are of better quality than before and you can render in 8K!
  • A fast, easy-to-use (one param to select), YouTube Upload profile that respects YouTube upload recommendation
  • Save time directly in After Effects render queue without having to use the command line and without using Adobe Media Encoder
  • Advanced features : FileSize targetting, 10 bpc, Full Range, YUV 4:2:2 / 4:4:4, Tuning profiles etc.

Optimize your workflow!

AfterCodecs is regularly updated with new codecs, features or speed improvements, see the Changelog. Their latest feature are MultiRender Markers to batch export in Premiere Pro and displaying a progress bar in your taskbar icon in After Effects when rendering!

How to install

Unzip and use the included installers! You can also use the aescripts + aeplugins manager application and follow the instructions given in the .pdf included in the archive. ffmpeg installation can be done automatically in AfterCodecs or manually by downloading the zip below.

User Guide

Requirements:

  • One license is for the same user on up to two computers not used at the same time
  • macOS Intel and Apple Silicon : 10.12 to 14 (Sonoma)
  • Microsoft Windows 10 and 11
  • Adobe CC 2014 to 2024 included

    • Adobe After Effects  2024, 2023, 2022, 2021, 2020, CC 2019, 2018, CC 2017, CC 2015.3, CC 2015, CC 2014
    • Adobe Premiere 2024, 2023, 2022, 2021, 2020, CC 2019, 2018, CC 2017, CC 2015.3, CC 2015, CC 2014
    • Adobe Media Encoder 2024, 2023, 2022, 2021, 2020, CC 2019, 2018, CC 2017, CC 2015, CC 2014

Codecs and containers:

  • [MOV] ProRes: 6 official profiles (422 LT / Proxy / Normal / HQ / 4444 / XQ) and 2 unofficial profiles (422 Ultra / 4444 Light). ProRes 4444 Light / 4444 / XQ supports the Alpha Channel.
  • [MOV] HAP GPU accelerated codecs: 4 codecs (Hap, Hap Alpha, Hap Q and Hap Q Alpha), you can choose disable Snappy compression and change the number of CPU chunks, and for Hap and Hap Alpha you can choose your compression algorithm (each have their own tradeoff between speed and quality)
  • [MOV] [MP4] x264: best H264 / AVC implementation, outperforming both Adobe Media Encoder and QuickTime H264. A special Youtube Upload profile is provided, very easy to use!
  • [MOV] [MP4] x265: files are ~25% lighter than x264 for the same quality, but slower encoding
  • [MOV] [MP4] x264 RGB: same as x264 but avoids YUV colorspace, best for storing separate channels in one video like UV maps, alpha, 3D passes etc. (for power users!)

Known Limitations:

  • Don’t use the ProRes for broadcast. Always test your hardware and software. It’s not an official version of ProRes; for example ProRes 4444’s Alpha channel doesn’t seem to be accepted by Blackmagic Hyperdeck Studio Mini.
  • For H264 and H265, dimensions of the video must be even (=> odd resolutions will fail), except if you choose YUV 4:4:4 for H264
  • Interlacing: lower field first in H264 recognized as top field first by Adobe

1.10.14 – 23 November 2022

  • Windows :
    • You can run our Install and Uninstaller .exe in command line like this : ‘start “Autokroma” /wait /b “InstallerOrUninstaller.exe” /S’, for our uninstaller you can pass an argument to specify which product to uninstall like this : ‘-Uninstall_AfterCodecs’. Do not forget to run your Terminal as Administrator, otherwise you will need user interaction to confirm the Administrator rights prompt. This also works using Microsoft SCCM (System Center Configuration Manager) to automate deployment
    • When launching our Installer in recent versions there was a “Do you want to allow this app from an unknown publisher to make changes to your device ?” yellow popup, now correctly replaced with the good Verified publisher blue popup

1.10.13 – 08 November 2022

  • MultiRender PrPro Panel : Adding markers stopped every time it encountered an item that did not come from a Project Item (for example an Adjustment Layer or a Motion Graphics Template), now fixed

1.10.12 – 27 October 2022

  • Fixed on macOS : “AfterCodecs is damaged and can’t be opened” popup when trying to launch Settings and License application

1.10.11 – 30 September 2022

  • After Effects : When you are still running the Trial (Unlicensed AfterCodecs) a 500 frames Trial warning will warn you at the end of the render queue

1.10.9 – 27 March 2022

  • MultiRender PrPro / AME : exported files have the correct timecode from the Sequence now
  • Fixed a crash happening when closing Premiere Pro and Media Encoder applications, it was leading Adobe to ask you to send a bug report

1.10.8 – 28 September 2021

  • macOS : Full support for Apple silicon in After Effects 2022 v22.1 BETA. The encoding was already done in Apple silicon since v1.10.6 even when running in Intel mode, but now you can launch AEfx in Apple silicon mode and AfterCodecs will be properly loaded. More info here https://www.autokroma.com/blog/Apple-Silicon-ARM-M1-Compatibility-with-Adobe-Creative-Cloud-Autokroma

  • Added support for Influx licensing in our Settings and License popup. Influx Importer for Adobe will allow you to import various new formats and codecs into Premiere Pro, After Effects and Media Encoder (for example .MKV .FLAC etc.), more info here : https://www.autokroma.com/Influx
