Adobe’s USD Plugins Now Open-Source
Adobe’s USD plugins, which allow users to exchange data with Pixar’s USD, are now open-source and available on GitHub. USD, or Universal Scene Description, is a powerful scene encoding format for content creation that enables 3D applications to exchange assets using a common language.
The video below featuring Giudo Quaroni, is queued up to where the USD FileFormat Plugins content begins. Guido began his career working with Pixar and became Pixar’s supervising technical director. He is now the Senior Director of Engineering on the Adobe 3D & Immersive team. Fun Fact, he also voiced Guido in the Cars movies!
Back on the topic of USD, the conversion technology used in the Adobe open-source conversion tools is the same technology used in Adobe Substance 3D, “for example, to convert 3D models from an internal USD representation to other file formats when exporting from Substance 3D Modeler,” says Jim Thacker, at CG Channel.
