Lyndon J. Barrois, Sr., a highly acclaimed animation director, artist, and visual effects expert from New Orleans, Louisiana, boasts an impressive career spanning over three decades in the industry.[1] Throughout his professional journey, Barrois has left an indelible mark on animated films, television series, and video game projects. Among his noteworthy contributions are his roles as an animation supervisor and director at esteemed visual effects studio Rhythm & Hues[5]. In addition, he created animation and VFX for Animal Logic, Digital Domain, Prime Focus VFX, and others[1] Some of the notable films under his belt include “The Matrix Reloaded,” “Happy Feet,” “Sucker Punch,” “The Tree of Life,” and the 2011 remake of “The Thing.”[2]

What sets Barrois apart is his innovative approach to animation, characterized by the use of unconventional materials, such as repurposed chewing gum wrappers. These materials serve as the foundation for his distinctive stop-motion animations, a creative process often captured and edited exclusively using iPhones.[3] He created a series called Sportraits, some of which you can see below. Some of his Sportraits are part of the permanent collection at Ripley’s Believe It or Not! in Los Angeles.[1]

The uniqueness of Barrois’s artistic style has not gone unnoticed, garnering him numerous awards and accolades within the animation community.

COVID Chess Set

During the COVID lockdown, Barrois created COVID Chess Set, a portrait of America in 2020. The piece is made from chewing gum wrappers, magnetic board, glass test tubes, cork, acetate, wire, acrylic, ink, watercolors, sponge, cotton, vinyl tape, and acrylic mirrors.

Beyond his creative endeavors, Barrois is a passionate advocate for promoting diversity and inclusion in the entertainment industry. He actively contributes to this cause by serving on the Inclusion Advisory Committee of the Academy Museum and being a member of the Visual Effects Branch at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (Oscars).[3] Through his affiliations with institutions like the California Institute of the Arts, Lyndon Barrois remains committed to fostering the growth and advancement of the arts and animation sectors.[3]
